The Triumph of the Container

Globalization is the driving force of container shipping, as ever more goods are transported across the world’s oceans in steel boxes on ever-larger container ships. But container shipping is also what made globalization possible in the first place. The principle of division of labor is nothing new to us today. In 1776, the economist Adam Smith, a formative thinker of the free market economy, elucidated this concept in his book, The Wealth of Nations. The operative principle is that the employees of a company divide up different tasks and thereby increase their productivity.

Change Recruitment Achieves MLC Standard

Change Recruitment Group announced that it is the first independent recruitment company in the U.K. to achieve the quality status which is gained by receiving a Declaration of Conformity to the Maritime Labor Convention. The Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) 2006 came into force August 20, 2013, and has led to greater employment protection for the majority of the world’s seafarers and Change International, the global division of Change Recruitment Group, is the first recruitment agency in the United Kingdom to achieve the requisite quality standards, having been audited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Iraqi Navy Ship Repair Facility Opens

VSE Corporation's GLOBAL Division teamed with the U.S. Naval Sea Systems command December 1 at a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the official opening of the Iraqi Navy Ship Repair Facility (SRF) in Umm Qasr, Iraq. VSE helped develop the SRF, which now serves as the Iraqi Navy's maintenance headquarters. The SRF is one of the first fully operational facilities in Iraq as part of the post war infrastructure sustainment. The facility, which was procured as part of a larger Foreign Military Sales case with the Iraqi Navy, will support five different vessel classes. Assisting in the development and management of the facility includes VSE Iraq Team Leader Steve Bennett and VSE Iraq Team Program Manager Hal Jones. "We began work on the ship repair facility in 2010," said Jones.

VSE Awarded Support Contract for Iraqi Navy

VSE Corporation reported that the Global Division of its International Group has been awarded a $10m delivery order to provide material and technical support for the Iraqi Navy at Umm Quasar, Iraq. The scope of work includes outfitting a new Ship Repair Facility with the industrial equipment required to maintain its ships and patrol craft as well as providing ship repair technical assistance to Iraqi Navy personnel.
