Wah Kwong Maritime's Chao is 2018 CMA Commodore

Award to be presented March 14, 2018 at the conclusion of the CMA’s Shipping 2018 Annual Conference and Exposition. Ms. Sabrina S. M. Chao, Executive Chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Ltd. has been named as the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Commodore for the year 2018. Ms. Chao follows a long succession of influential maritime industry leaders as Commodore. The 2018 Commodore Award will be presented on March 14, 2018 at the Gala Dinner marking the conclusion of the annual Connecticut Maritime Association conference and trade exposition, at the Hilton Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. NIMASA Repositions as Global Player

Nigeria would be hosting the 3rd Conference of the Association of Heads of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA Conference) in Abuja, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, from 19th -21st of April,2017 in a bid to continue to improve on its role as a global player in the comity of maritime nations. Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) director-general Dr. Dakuku Peterside has said in a statement that the meeting will be hosted in conjunction with International Maritime Organisation (IMO). It will bring together major maritime administrators and leading stakeholders in Africa to discuss ways of improving the maritime sector on the continent.

Fugitive Treasure Hunter Arrested in Florida

An Ohio man who recovered as much as $400 million in gold from a shipwreck has been arrested in Florida after two years on the run and was scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday. Tommy Thompson was detained on Tuesday night at a Hilton hotel in west Boca Raton, Florida, said Barry Golden, spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service in the Southern District of Florida. He was due to appear in federal court in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, Golden said. He is wanted for failing to appear in a federal court in Ohio in 2012. Thompson was arrested with a woman, Alison Antekeier, who also has an outstanding arrest warrant in Ohio, according to Golden. They appeared to have been living in the hotel for about two years, he said.

Capsize Injures Three Coast Guardsmen

The search-and-rescue crew was responding with other local agencies to a report of two people in the water two nautical miles northeast of San Juan Harbor when the incident occurred. The three-man crew of a Coast Guard 33-foot Special Purpose Craft/Law Enforcement was rescued by the crew of a Puerto Rico Police marine unit immediately after the incident north of the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Royal Olympic Reports Bookings Up for 2002

Royal Olympic Cruise Lines Inc. has been advised by Louis Cruise Lines Ltd (LCL) that agreement has been reached for the shares held by LCL in ROC Holdings Inc. (ROCH), the majority shareholder in Royal Olympic Cruise Lines (ROCL), to be exchanged for a number of shares held by Louis Tourist Agency Ltd (LTA) in Cyprus Tourist Development Company (CTD), the owners of the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia. Acquisition of the $20 million subordinated bond by LTA and the Guarantee of Liabilities amounting to $6.0 million. As part of the acquisition of LCL’s investment in ROCL, LTA will guarantee the $6.0 million loan made by LCL to ROCL and will acquire $20.0 million subordinated convertible bond issued by ROCL to LCL in 2001.

Vinashin Signs Contracts at VietShip

Reports indicate that Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) signed 18 contracts worth more than $400 million at VietShip in Hanoi yesterday, showing the growing interest in the country’s shipbuilding industry. Under the contracts, Vina-shin will supply three 8,700-DWT ships to Kanematsu of Japan and ten 4,600-DWT ships to Clipper of Denmark. Vinashin deputy general director Le Loc said Vinashin and the Chinese company Camso had signed a US$200-million contract to build a shipyard in the Nhon Hoi Economic Zone in the central province of Binh Dinh. Vinashin also secured contracts with the two local companies, Northern Food Corporation and Southern Food Corporation for rice shipments to the Philippines, Cuba and Scandinavian countries.
