Gensets: New Fuels but Perennial Goals

Fuel flexibility may be a key driver for recent developments in gensets, but the perennial goals of lowering CapEx and OpEx remain.Fuel flexibility is one of the pillars of decarbonization that is being embraced by genset OEMs. Fuel efficiency, a second pillar, goes hand in hand with that because new fuels will be more expensive, but these concerns come in addition to the on-going drive to reduce CapEx and OpEx for shipowners.MAN Energy Solutions introduced its auxiliary MAN 35/44DF CD engine in June 2023. It is designed to be future-proof and will be ready for methanol operation by 2026.

Japanese Yard Orders 16 HiMSEN Methanol Engines

HD Hyundai Begins Construction of Engine Factory in Saudi Arabia

A joint venture between HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Saudi Arabian Development and Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments has held a groundbreaking ceremony for an engine factory in Saudi Arabia.The engine plant will be built in an area of 150,000 square meters in the King Salman Global Maritime Industries Complex in Ras Al-Khair near Jubail, a city in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Maersk Orders 'World's First' Carbon-neutral Methanol Fueled Container Ship

Shipping giant Maersk said Thursday it had ordered a feeder vessel with a dual-engine technology enabling it to sail on either methanol or traditional very low Sulphur fuel.The feeder, for which Maersk says will be the world's first container vessel fueled by carbon-neutral methanol, will be 172 meters long and will sail in the network of Sealand Europe, a Maersk subsidiary, on the Baltic shipping route between Northern Europe and the Bay of Bothnia. Saudi Aramco, Hyundai Heavy Sign MoU

Saudi Aramco, Dussur – the Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Company, and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly collaborate on engines and pumps business development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The MOU lays out an engine and pump business cooperation framework, through the formation of a joint venture (JV) to manufacture two-stroke engines, four-stroke engines and marine pumps; including sales and aftersales services in the MENA region. The manufacturing facility will be co-located with the maritime yard in Ras Al-Khair, at the King Salman International Complex for Maritime Industries and services, where it will develop synergies with several complementary ventures.

Shipbuilder and a marine engine manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced it has produced its 10,000th HiMSEN (Hi-Touch Marine and Stationary Engine) engine installed on a 14,400 TEU containership ordered from Costamare, Greece. New HHI HiMSEN Diesel Engine Gains Class Approvals

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) has  won type approval for the new 35,300 bhp HiMSEN H46/60V engine from 9 classification societies. The type approval test completion of the IMO Tier III compliant HiMSEN H46/60V expands Hyundai Heavy’s medium speed marine engine line-up to cover output from 780 bhp to 35,300 bhp. The HiMSEN engine (Hi-touch Marine & Stationary Engine) was originally developed by Hyundai Heavy in 2000. Since then, the Company has churned out 7,200 units for marine propulsion and land-based power plants.

Hyundai Starts Export of LNG Fueled Engines

The new gas engine runs on liquefied natural gas rather than heavy crude oil and has a maximum power output of 13,000 bhp. The HiMSEN H35/40GV can be used to generate power for onshore power plants, commercial ships, and offshore facilities including drillships. The new engine emits 20% less carbon dioxide than diesel engines, reduces NOx emissions by 97% to reach world’s lowest level of 50 ppm, and improves engine performance by 47%.
