With HybriGen, BAE Systems Helps the Maritime Industry to Decarbonize

(Image: BAE Systems)

As the maritime industry continues along its emissions reduction journey, one company helping to lead the way is BAE Systems, a firm that’s been involved with electric and hybrid propulsion for over 25 years.“We’re all about helping maritime operators get to zero emissions, and it doesn’t matter if it’s all-electric, a hybrid application or even fuel cell. We have the technology to help operators achieve lower emissions and keep operating just as they’re used to with conventional based propulsion…

Electric Propulsion: The Dawn of a New Generation of Marine Power?

A foil ferry designed to use battery electric propulsion (Image: Glosten)

Technological advancement is opening new doors for hybrid and fully electric vessels. In mid-2020, the U.S. Navy accepted the delivery of the USS Zumwalt, the Navy’s first full-electric power and propulsion surface combatant. The ship’s new electric propulsion plant provides favorable efficiency coupled with a reduced total cost of ownership. The design is flexible and efficient to deliver power where it’s needed, when it’s needed. Its adoption is symbolic of a maritime future and what could be in store for other marine craft…

Propulsion Profile: Konrad-driven

(Photo: Silverships)

Konrad Marine has launched several iterations of its signature sterndrive since unveiling its first units in the 1990s. Konrad’s latest lineup, the 600B series, was rolled out in 2014, with the first drives delivered to customers at the start of 2015 and strong market uptake ever since. Featuring the larger gears first introduced in its 600 series, Konrad’s 600B drives also include a new larger transom with integrated steering.“The biggest change when we developed the 600B series drive was our heavy-duty transom assembly,” says Fred Sparling, senior application engineer.

EPA Tier 4: Difficult and Contentious, 12 Years and Counting

© JinnaritT / Adobe Stock

When it comes to complying with EPA’s Tier 4 emissions regulations, there’s no shortage of creativity emerging from America’s maritime engineering firms. Companies such as Hug Engineering are offering flexible, customized aftertreatment-based control systems that can assemble almost in modular like fashion. Other companies, such as ABB Group, offer battery-hybrid power sources to complement combustion power and avoid threshold diesel emissions. Engine manufacturers, such as Cummins…

Wärtsilä Rolls-out Pure Gas Marine Engine

Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications. The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine. The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure. The commercial launch of the Wärtsilä 31SG takes place in September at the Gastech 2019 conference and exhibition being held in Houston, Texas, as well as at the Neva St.

EnScrub’s Sea Trials Completed

(Photo: EnSolve Biosystems)

EnSolve Biosystems said it has completed sea trials of its EnScrub SOx Scrubber Water Treatment System onboard a vessel operating in the Baltic Region. The EnScrub system was installed in April 2016 and the DNV certification testing that was conducted in August 2016 revealed that during closed-loop operation, the EnScrub system was successful in legally discharging 97 percent of the SOx scrubber water entering the system. The remaining 3 percent (sludge) was sent to a decanter for further dewatering.

Economics, Efficiency & Emissions Drive Effective Choices

Louisiana-based Karl Senner widens its propulsion solutions toolkit with two options, both designed to provide economics, efficiencies and lower emissions. In the increasingly competitive marine propulsion markets, workboat operators now have many choices from which to select an appropriate, long term solution for their propulsion needs. Paramount in that process is the need to meet regulatory requirements without breaking the bank. In response, propulsion distributor Karl Senner LLC offers two different electrical system arrangements; both of which will allow operators to remain tier compliant without the use of after-treatment. Way back in 1967, Karl H. Senner sold the very first Reintjes Gearbox in the North America to Dickie Gonsoulin of LeBeouf Towing.

Can Domestic Shipping Become Our Industry’s Farmer’s Market?

Crowley Maritime Corp. recently took delivery of Louisiana, the third of four new, Jones Act product tankers being built for the company by Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI). These tankers are at the forefront of the industry for their potential future conversion to LNG propulsion. (Credit: Crowley Maritime)

Arriving at the Farmer’s Market this morning I made the decision to grill some hand cut rib eye with fresh vegetables and potatoes later that evening. I searched several of the local farm kiosks to find the mix I wanted and then reached into my pocket to pay for my choices. The price for all this local fare is not competitive with Cosco or Walmart, but I know the vegetables are organically grown without chemicals and the local beef is grass fed. The price point may not be right but the effort supports local business and the farmers who work hard to provide us sustainable products and quality.

Voith Schneider Propeller for Tugs and OSV

Voith rounds off its product portfolio for tugs and offshore support vessels (OSV) with the new size 34 Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP). The new design of the VSP 34 is significantly lighter and more convenient to maintain, reducing services times by up to 40 percent. The market for tugs and offshore support vessels is increasingly changing: the demand for tugs with a bollard pull of 80 tons and offshore support vessels with an input power of 3 000kW per propulsor is constantly growing. To provide solutions for this change in market demands, Voith developed the new VSP 34.

EnSolve Launches Scrubber Water Treatment System

EnSolve Biosystems announced today that it has developed a new product called EnScrub which treats particulates and petroleum hydrocarbons from the effluent of shipboard sulfur oxides (SOx) scrubber systems. This patent-pending technology, partially funded by a Phase II National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, combines biological and physical processes to remove and destroy petroleum hydrocarbons from the aqueous effluent of SOx scrubbers. “Whereas SOx scrubber systems focus on the removal of sulfur oxides from engine emissions, harmful particulates and petroleum hydrocarbons end up in the aqueous effluent of these scrubber systems,” explained Jason Caplan, president of EnSolve.
