Konrad Marine has launched several iterations of its signature sterndrive since unveiling its first units in the 1990s. Konrad’s latest lineup, the 600B series, was rolled out in 2014, with the first drives delivered to customers at the start of 2015 and strong market uptake ever since. Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications.The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine.The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure. EnSolve Biosystems said it has completed sea trials of its EnScrub SOx Scrubber Water Treatment System onboard a vessel operating in the Baltic Region. The EnScrub system was installed in April 2016 and the DNV certification testing that was conducted in August 2016 revealed that during closed-loop operation, the EnScrub system was successful in legally discharging 97 percent of the SOx scrubber water entering the system. The remaining 3 percent (sludge) was sent to a decanter for further dewatering.

Louisiana-based Karl Senner widens its propulsion solutions toolkit with two options, both designed to provide economics, efficiencies and lower emissions. In the increasingly competitive marine propulsion markets, workboat operators now have many choices from which to select an appropriate, long term solution for their propulsion needs. Paramount in that process is the need to meet regulatory requirements without breaking the bank. In response, propulsion distributor Karl Senner LLC offers two different electrical system arrangements; both of which will allow operators to remain tier compliant without the use of after-treatment. Arriving at the Farmer’s Market this morning I made the decision to grill some hand cut rib eye with fresh vegetables and potatoes later that evening. I searched several of the local farm kiosks to find the mix I wanted and then reached into my pocket to pay for my choices. The price for all this local fare is not competitive with Cosco or Walmart, but I know the vegetables are organically grown without chemicals and the local beef is grass fed. The price point may not be right but the effort supports local business and the farmers who work hard to provide us sustainable products and quality.

Voith rounds off its product portfolio for tugs and offshore support vessels (OSV) with the new size 34 Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP). The new design of the VSP 34 is significantly lighter and more convenient to maintain, reducing services times by up to 40 percent. The market for tugs and offshore support vessels is increasingly changing: the demand for tugs with a bollard pull of 80 tons and offshore support vessels with an input power of 3 000kW per propulsor is constantly growing. EnSolve Biosystems announced today that it has developed a new product called EnScrub which treats particulates and petroleum hydrocarbons from the effluent of shipboard sulfur oxides (SOx) scrubber systems. This patent-pending technology, partially funded by a Phase II National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, combines biological and physical processes to remove and destroy petroleum hydrocarbons from the aqueous effluent of SOx scrubbers. “Whereas SOx scrubber systems focus on the removal of sulfur oxides from engine emissions, harmful particulates and petroleum hydrocarbons end up in the aqueous effluent of these scrubber systems,” explained Jason Caplan, president of EnSolve.

SSP Offshore Inc. announced that the SSP team and its proprietary platforms, the SSP320 and SSP Plus, reached a major development milestone, completing a full spectrum of global environment performance tests carried out at the LabOceano/Coppe testing basin in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
