SEEMP can make a fleet more competitive in a difficult business environment while reducing its impact on the environment. In January 2013, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) put into force new regulations intended to improve the energy efficiency of ships over 400 gross tonnes (gt) on international voyages, including a requirement to keep on board a ship-specific Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). This initiative is intended to reduce ship greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by encouraging ship operators to reduce energy consumption. IACS Renews Call for Evidence-based EEDI Database
Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Roberto Cazzulo, speaking at the IMO World Maritime Day Symposium on 'Sustainable Maritime Transportation System', noted that IMO had recently supported in principle his organization's proposal for establishing an (Energy Efficient Design Index) "EEDI Database" for new ships being constructed in accordance with new IMO GHG regulations. In a detailed paper Mr Cazzulo observed that action by IMO on climate change would lead to significant emission reductions, between 9 and 16% in 2020 and between 17 and 25% by 2030 compared with current practice. IACS Chairman Calls for Evidence-Based Ship Efficiency Assessments
Roberto P. Cazzulo, Chairman of the IACS Council and of RINA Services S.p.A., speaking at the IMO World Maritime Day Symposium on Sustainable Maritime Transportations System, noted that IMO had recently supported in principle an IACS proposal for establishing an (Energy Efficient Design Index) “EEDI Database” for new ships being constructed in accordance with new IMO GHG regulations. “This will create an evidence base on which to judge the success of the regulations and to help design more efficient new ships,” he said. Wan Hai Lines Chooses ClassNK-Napa Green
ClassNK and maritime software company Napa have announced that Taiwan-based Wan Hai Lines Ltd. has chosen ClassNK-Napa Green ship efficiency software for use on Wan Hai 516, a 4680 TEU vessel delivered by CSBC in April 2013. This marks the first time that the operational optimization and SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) solution will be installed commercially on an existing vessel. Maran Tankers Collaborates With ABS
With energy efficiency at the forefront of today's environmental agenda, Maran Tankers Management Inc. (MTM), the largest tanker operator in Greece, has collaborated with class society ABS in the development, review and revision of their company and Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (CEEMP/SEEMP).
