Breaking Down Barriers to Energy-Efficient Shipping

International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s work to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping has conducted in Mumbai, India with a train-the-trainer course on energy-efficient ship operation. The course (28 February – 3 March) is training maritime educators and officials to pass on expertise on the complex technical and regulatory aspects designed to make shipping greener. Thirty participants from Indian, Bangladeshi, Maldivian and Sri Lankan maritime training institutes, maritime administrations and classification societies are taking part. The training includes group exercises in which the participants develop and deliver presentations on barriers to ship energy efficiency.

PSC Inspection Workshop by IRS

IRClass (Indian Register of Shipping) has conducted an executive workshop, in coordination with India’s Directorate General of Shipping and the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA), on Port State Control (PSC) inspections. The workshop, inaugurated by the Director General of Shipping, Mr. Deepak Shetty, saw presentations highlighting reasons which can be attributed to PSC detentions, analysing root causes, and suggesting preventative actions. The responsibilities of ship staff/ship owners/managers, classification societies and Flag were deliberated, plus vital steps to be taken prior to vessels entering ports. Decade Old India Shipping Summit Makes History

In ten years, India Shipping Summit held consistently in Mumbai, has sailed on a robust growth course despite the worldwide witnessing recessionary waves buffeting any endeavors to grow and gain. The reasons are not too far to see. From the very beginning it has been reputed to be a mega event of South East Asia. It sought consistently to bring government representatives and the leading lights of the industry on to a common platform thus acting as a beacon for the country’s maritime trade to move on the road to progress. It has continued to garner support from every section of the trade and industry each time the event has taken place. This year the three-day event held last week brought together a bigger gathering of shipping elites and the who’s who in the industry.

World Maritime Day 2014 Celebrated in Mumbai

25th September, the Day when the World Maritime Day gets celebrated in Mumbai is an event well-known among the seafaring community and in the shipping and other related circles. Though other centers in India too have their own celebration but many make it a point to attend the one that is held at the Auditorium of the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) ( SCI is the national carrier) at Nariman Point, Mumbai. Delegate registeration for the 3rd India Ship Recycling Conference is going on at a hot pace with a lot of interest having generated with the new Indian Government coming up with a robust growth policy for the Indian Maritime sector. Shipping Bodies Raise Alarm as Pirates Take Ransom

The International Chamber of Shipping, ITF, Indian National Shipowners’ Association, NUSI, MUI, IMEC, InterManager, Intertanko and BIMCO deplore the latest development in the Indian Ocean piracy crisis as some Indian crew members of a released merchant ship are retained ashore in Somalia. The Asphalt Venture, a 1991 built asphalt/bitumen tanker was hijacked by Somali pirates on September 28th 2010 and, following a ransom payment, the ship was released on April 15. Despite the owners’ concluding a dialogue with the pirates for the full release of 15 crew and vessel and payment of the ransom, the vessel was released but the Master has reported that 6 officers and 1 rating were taken off the tanker and made to accompany the pirates ashore.

In the first 3 quarters of 2007, a rise of more than 40% in the shipbuilding output has been recorded amounting to some 12 million DWT.

India to Build Own LNG Fleet

Despite some delays, the Indian shipping industry appears to be finally gearing up to develop an LNG (liquefied natural gas) fleet. It is estimated that by 2012 India's LNG imports will almost equal Japan's current LNG imports of 60 million tons per annum. And to transport this quantity, the country will need about 25 LNG vessels by 2012 and 34 by 2025. Indian ship-owners are realizing the need to build up an LNG fleet. "Japan transported about 43 perent of its total LNG import of 59.1 million tonnes in 2003 on Japanese owned and controlled ships. Similarly, Korea transported about 61 per cent of its LNG imports of 19.3 million tonnes during that period on Korean controlled ships.
