Canaveral Initiative in Marine Highways Program

The East Coast Marine Highway Initiative, a partnership between Port Canaveral, the Port of New Bedford, Mass. and the Port of Baltimore, Md. has received recognition as an initiative in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new Marine Highways Program. The Department’s Maritime Administration chose eight projects and six initiatives from 35 applications submitted by ports and local transportation agencies. The initiative proposes to develop a Marine Highway service utilizing a fleet of existing and new-build U.S. flag vessels to transport both domestic and international containers and trailers to destinations along the I-95 corridor in order to relieve vehicle congestion and truck traffic.

Payne Helps Steer Fla. Transportation Panel

Developing a roadmap for Florida’s transportation needs during the next 50 years is the challenge that Port Canaveral CEO J. Stanley Payne has accepted as a member of the 2060 Florida Transportation Plan (FTP) Steering Committee. The plan, adopted five years ago, provides the policy framework for allocating the department’s transportation funds. Payne is the current chairman of the Florida Ports Council. The Steering Committee will focus on updating the plan to respond to new trends and technologies that have developed.

Payne Named to AAPA Board

J. Stanley Payne, Chief Executive Officer of the Canaveral Port Authority, will serve on the 2009-10 Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). He was named to the 10-member board during the annual AAPA meeting held this year in Galveston, Texas. AAPA is an alliance of leading ports in the Western Hemisphere. The mission of the organization is to protect and advance the common interests of its diverse members as they connect their communities with the global transportation system.

FL Governor Taps Port Canaveral CEO for New Seaport Security Council

J. Stanley Payne, CEO of Port Canaveral, is among 10 leaders selected to serve on Governor Bush’s newly created Seaport Security Standards Advisory Council. The panel of port, tourism, and law enforcement leaders will review the current security measures enacted in 2001 to determine what changes are needed to protect Florida’s ports from terrorism, drug trafficking, and cargo theft. The Council also will provide a formal review process for regulation disputes.
