2012 Annual ASNE Award Winners

Each year, the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) celebrates excellence in naval engineering by recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in one or more facets of the industry. 2012 Gold Medal Award (Engineering) Recipient - RADM Thomas J. Surface Warriors to Meet at Annual Symposium

The Surface Navy Association (SNA) National Symposium will be held January 15-17, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, VA. The association was incorporated in 1985 to promote greater coordination and communication among those in the military, business and academic communities who share a common interest in Naval Surface Warfare and to support the activities of Surface Naval Forces. SNA provides for its members support, programs and activities which enable professional growth, personal satisfaction and camaraderie.

USS Miami Fire Damage Extent Not Clear Yet

The fire aboard Miami damaged the torpedo room, crew quarters and command and control areas in the fore part of the submarine, but the nuclear propulsion components in the after part of the sub were not harmed. Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy, commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command, told Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, that he’s hopeful that the ship can be repaired. He said that many vital components escaped damage because they had been removed for the 20-month overhaul and that salvage parts are available from previously decommissioned Los Angeles-class subs. The intensity of the fire, the lack of lighting, the thick smoke and the metal hull that turned the submarine into an oven all contributed to a difficult blaze for firefighters to extinguish.

USS George H. W. Bush Completes Trials

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NSYE:NOC) has completed builder's sea trials of the nation's newest and most advanced nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). NAVSEA Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Hosts Change of Command

At a Change of Command ceremony conducted on October at the Naval Sea Systems Command?s (NAVSEA) Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Captain Vernon T. Williams, was relieved by Captain Kevin M. McCoy as commanding officer of the shipyard. CVN 78 Ship Specification Signed

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Program Executive Officer (PEO) Aircraft Carriers held a signature and awards ceremony on Sept. 5 at the Washington Navy Yard to commemorate the certification of the ship specifications for the CVN 78 Class Aircraft Carriers, which makes up the CVN 21 program. NAVSEA's Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) led efforts, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Newport News, the lead design shipyard, to develop the CVN 78 ship specifications with support from across the Navy Enterprise. The certification of the CVN 78 ship specifications marks a major milestone in the future aircraft design process and forms the basis of the technical data package used to prepare a ship construction contract.

CVN 78 Ship Specifications Certified

The CVN 78 ship specifications were certified at a Senior Stakeholder Board/Executive Steering Group meeting held recently, after 12 months of specification writing and three months of intense reading sessions. The Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate (SEA 05), in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Newport News (the Lead Design shipyard), led efforts to develop the ship specifications with support from across the Navy enterprise. NAVSEA and the Program Executive Officer for Aircraft Carriers (PEO Carriers) will commemorate the certification of the ship specifications for the CVN 78 Class Aircraft Carriers in a signing and awards ceremony to be held Sept. 5 at the Washington Navy Yard.
