Russia Tracks US, British Naval Ships in Barents Sea

Russia’s Northern Fleet is tracking a group of U.S. and British naval vessels which entered the Barents Sea on the morning of May 4, the Russian Defence Ministry was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.The U.S. Navy said earlier that four U.S. Navy ships and a Royal Navy vessel had entered the Barents Sea to conduct maritime security operations in what it called the challenging environmental conditions above the Arctic Circle.It said U.S.

Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Damaged after Floating Dock Sinks

Russia's only aircraft carrier was damaged while undergoing repairs in the north of the country after the floating dock holding it sank in the early hours of Tuesday morning and a crane crashed onto its deck.The Admiral Kuznetsov has seen action in Russia's military campaign in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad with its planes carrying out air strikes against rebel forces.It was being overhauled on one of the world's biggest floating docks in the icy waters of the Kola Bay near Murmansk close to where Russia's Northern Fleet is based and was due to go back into service in 2021.Maria Kovtun, Murmansk's governor, said in a statement that a rescue operation had been launched and 71 people evacuated after the floating dock holding the ship had begun to sink.The warship had been suc

Russia Ramping Up Arctic Push

The nuclear icebreaker Lenin, the pride and joy of the Soviet Union's Arctic great game, lies at perpetual anchor in the frigid water here. A relic of the Cold War, it is now a museum. But nearly three decades after the Lenin was taken out of service to be turned into a visitor attraction, Russia is again on the march in the Arctic and building new nuclear icebreakers. It is part of a push to firm Moscow's hand in the High North as it vies for dominance with traditional rivals Canada, the United States, and Norway as well as newcomer China.

Northern Fleet Adds Research Vessel

The latest oceanographic research vessel "Yantar" has arrived at the base of the Northern Fleet in Murmansk region. This was announced by Head of Press Service of the Federation Council Vadim Serga. "The crew has completed the transition from the Atlantic Ocean to the Kola Bay" - quoted by TASS Sergey. In May of this year, "Amber" was raised by St. Andrew's flag. This was followed by testing of the equipment and facilities the ship in the deep Atlantic. The technical capabilities of "Amber" will help raise hydrographic and research activities of the Northern Fleet in the oceans, especially in the Arctic, to a new level, I'm sure the commander of the Northern Fleet Vladimir Korolev.

Unique Gun Salvaged from Barents Sea

Divers Northern Fleet raised from the bottom of the Kola Bay, an American anti-aircraft gun, which lay there for 70 years. Earlier it was reported that the specialists of the search and rescue (UPASR) Northern Fleet (NF) completed the preparatory work in the area of the death of an American military transport ship "Thomas Donaldson" (type "Liberty"). During the Great Patriotic War, the ship participated in the composition of the Arctic convoy JW-65, who drove the Soviet Murmansk under the Lend-Lease ammunition, military equipment and other goods. In March 1945, "Thomas Donaldson" was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank near the entrance to Kola Bay (Barents Sea) at a depth of 60 meters. Diving operations on the vessel began in 2014.

Murmansk Region Head for Zoning Arctic Territories

Murmansk Governor Marina Kovtun, at the first meeting of the State Commission for the development of the Arctic has proposed a change to the system of energy pricing for the Murmansk region and zoning of marine areas. The authorities of the Murmansk region linked the successful development of Russian oil and gas projects in the Arctic with the timely development of the Murmansk transport hub and the construction of the railway on the western shore of the Kola Bay, Interfax reported. "The project is the integrated development of the Murmansk Transport Hub, which is implemented in our region, one hundred percent is the Arctic, because it allows in the future to extend the infrastructural capacity of the Murmansk port," - said the governor.

An Energy SuperPower

Russia is an energy superpower and the country has vast and rich natural resources. Besides gas and coal reserves (some of the largest in the world), Russia today is ranked as the world’s biggest oil producing nation accounting for well over 12% of the global output. Moreover, the country exports more than 70% of its oil to the world markets. That said, Russia’s output of oil amounts to a third of what collectively the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) produces. The country has relied on oil production for decades, however there has been a notable geographical shift.

Lukoil, Conocophillips’ YK Field Production Begins

OAO LUKOIL President Vagit Alekperov and ConocoPhillips Chairman and CEO Jim Mulva today participated in a special ceremony on the occasion of the startup of the Yuzhno Khylchuyu (YK) field located in the Nenets Autonomous District.

One of the biggest fields in the north of the Timan Pechora oil and gas province, this field is developed by OOO Naryanmarneftegaz, a LUKOIL and ConocoPhillips joint venture (70% and 30%, respectively). The field was discovered in 1981. Oil quality there surpasses the Russian Urals export blend quality: its density is 35.5 API (Urals, 32.0 API), and sulfur content is 0.71% (Urals, 1.3%). Mitropoulos Visits Russia
