Kyrgyzstan Joins the IMO as 176th Member State

The Kyrgyz Republic has joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The United Nations agency, responsible for regulating shipping, now has 176 Member States.  Kyrgyzstan deposited its instrument of acceptance to the IMO Convention with the United Nations with effect from  February 27, 2024.  IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez announced the new Member State to delegates attending the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE 10).

New China-Europe Intermodal Route Opened

Marking the opening of a new China-Europe freight train route a freight train left Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, heading for Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.According to a report in Xinhua, the train consists of 42 containers loaded with laptops, LED panels, green tea and other products manufactured in Hunan province.With this service, Zhuzhou has become the third city in Hunan Province to open international freight train route to Europe after Changsha and Huaihua.The train will leave China through the Horgos Pass in Xinjiang and pass Kazakhstan before reaching its destination.The whole trip will take seven days…

UN Calls for Investigation on Tanker Attacks

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Friday for an independent investigation to establish the facts and who was responsible for attacks on two oil tankers this week in the Gulf of Oman.The United States blamed Iran for the attacks on Thursday, a charge Tehran rejected. Amid the rising tensions, Guterres said he was available to mediate if the parties agreed, however he added that "at the present moment we don't see a mechanism of dialogue possible to be in place."Tehran and Washington have both said they have no interest in starting a war, but this has done little to assuage concerns that the two arch foes could stumble into a conflict.

Kuryk Port Opens New Ferry Complex

Kuryk port, located in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan, has opened its new ferry complex.Officials of relevant government agencies and representatives of private companies from Georgia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Iran, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan attended the event with the participation of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.The Kuryk port is located on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and plays an exceptional role in increasing freight traffic in this direction. EEU Starts Functioning

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) officially starts functioning on January 1. The EEU unites Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. The new economic union envisages free flow of capital, goods services, and workforce on a common market including over 170 million people, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio. The union operates through supranational and intergovernmental institutions. The supranational institutions are the Eurasian Commission (the executive body), the Court of the EEU (the judicial body) and the Eurasian Development Bank. National governments are usually represented by the Eurasian Commission's Council. The constituent states of the EEU are placed under binding laws and have equal representation within the union's executive and judicial bodies.

Gazprom to Upgrade Gas Supplies to Kyrgyzstan

The development of gas transmission and distribution infrastructure of Kyrgyzstan was discussed during a meeting held at the Gazprom headquarters hosted today between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Company's Management Committee and Djoomart Otorbaev, Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic. It was pointed out that the relevant facilities in the Republic were well rundown. In this regard, Gazprom is working out the General Gas Supply and Gasification Scheme of Kyrgyzstan until 2030. Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFAI) convened conference and a meeting at FFFAI – Mumbai office of its members with Mr. Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce to brief members on International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC). FFFAI is doing a dry run study of the bottlenecks on the INSTC route. The naval squadron, including the Varyag missile cruiser, three Udaloy class destroyers and three fleet support ships, will join 16 Chinese surface ships for drills in the Yellow Sea between Aril 22 and 27. China, Russia Plan Naval War Exercise

China says it will join Russia in naval war games starting next month in the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. The official Xinhua News Agency quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun as saying that the exercise will begin in late April and run into May. The specific locations were not disclosed. Yang says the joint exercise is aimed at improving cooperation and ensuring stability in the Asia-Pacific region. China and Russia have conducted several joint military exercises since 2005 within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The group also includes the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and aims to promote regional cooperation and check U.S. influence.

USCG Expands Port Security

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the process of instituting new port security measures. include in their advance notice of arrival a crew list that includes the nationality of each crew member. Iraq, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the UAE and Uzbekistan. This new measure is not part of the long-standing Special Interest Vessel (SIV) Programme. Rather it is an effort to ensure that suspect individuals, and individuals with criminal records, do not enter the US. There has already been one instance where the Coast Guard required a master of a listed nationality to be removed from his position before the vessel was allowed to enter port.

Cameroon Still Seen As Most Corrupt Nation

West Africa's Cameroon retained the dubious honor of being viewed as the country most likely to take bribes in 1999 while Denmark remained squeaky clean, according to an independent report. Corruption watchdog Transparency International's 1999 report also showed that companies from China, which is seeking to join the World Trade Organization, were viewed as the most likely to pay bribes in order to win business overseas. The latest Corruption Perceptions Index showed that of the 99 countries tracked, only Denmark received a perfect 10 rating for the second year running, showing that investors, risk analysts and the public think the country and its public officials are clean. The survey ranks countries by scores ranging from 10 (highly clean) to zero (highly corrupt).
