The Department of the Navy recognized more than 50 acquisition professionals for exceptional efforts in the acquisition field during a Pentagon ceremony Nov. 17. Hosted by Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition) Sean Stackley, the 2016 Acquisition Excellence Awards celebrated individuals and teams for upholding key tenets of acquisition including competition, affordability, technical expertise, innovative techniques and professional acumen. The US Department of Defense informs it has awarded contract modifications to previously awarded contracts with BAE Systems Land & Armaments, as well as with General Dynamics Information Technology to understand the risks and assist the government in determining the best approach for developing a High Waterspeed Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV). The DoD explains that detailed trade studies, requirements studies, operational effectiveness analyses and initial concept design results have been reported to Marine Corps leadership and the assistant secretary of the Navy research, development and acquisition by each of the companies named.

The U.S. Navy on Wednesday asked U.S. and foreign weapons makers for technical and cost data on the design and weapons for a new possible small warship to succeed the Navy's current Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) by 2019. Companies will have 21 days to respond to two separate requests for information on both ship designs and the radars and other weapons that would go on board, said John Burrow, executive director of the Marine Corps' Systems Command and head of a task force studying alternatives for a so-called small surface combatant.

Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) engineers are developing tools to enable U.S. Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEFs) to more accurately predict energy consumption needs in theater. NSWC PCD Expeditionary Systems Division (Code E30) engineers were asked by Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYCOM) to reduce the energy consumption of Marine Corps Combat Operations Centers (COCs). MARCORSYCOM acquires and provides life-cycle support of ground weapon and information technology (IT) systems for U.S. Marines.

Thackrah, today honored 46 of the Department of the Navy's top scientists and engineers at the second annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon, May 29. The Department of the Navy has over 35,000 scientists and engineers pursuing research, development, acquisition and sustainment. The award was established to honor those who reached superior technical achievements and to promote continued scientific and engineering excellence. "This award ceremony recognizes the top scientists and engineers in the Department of the Navy," Thackrah said.

WASHINGTON -- Vice Adm. Phillip Balisle, Commander Naval Sea Systems Command, outlined prerequisites for acquiring a sea base during a panel discussion Wednesday at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Expo. The discussion, entitled "Ensuring Access Through Focused Acquisition," also featured comments by The Honorable John J. Young, Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition; Vice Adm. Walter B. Massenburg, Commander, Naval Air Systems Command; and Brig. Gen. William D. Catto, Commanding General, Marine Corps Systems Command. The first prerequisite he identified was thoroughly articulating the requirement.

International Military and Government LLC (IMG), Warrenville, Ill., is being awarded $509m for firm-fixed-priced delivery order #0005 under previously awarded contract for 1,000 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Category I Low Rate Initial Production vehicles. Category I is a MRAP vehicle used by the Marine Corps and other Joint Forces for convoy operations. The MRAP vehicles are required to increase the survivability and mobility of troops operating in hazardous fire areas against known threats such as improvised explosive devices, small arms fire and mines. Work will be performed in West Point, Miss., and work is expected to be completed April 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Combatant Craft Detachment (CCD) of the Carderock Division, a field engineering organization of the Naval Sea Systems Command, has announced that a forum focusing on Department of Defense and government boats and craft will take place June 19-21 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.
