German propulsion giant Schottel looks back at five decades of controllable-pitch propeller (CPP) development. CPPs have been developed and produced on the Baltic coast of Germany since 1962 – initially in Rostock, and then in Wismar from 1964. 50 Years of Schottel Controllable Pitch Propellers
Controllable-pitch propellers have been developed and produced on the Baltic coast of Germany since 1962 – initially in Rostock, and then in Wismar from 1964. The first units were manufactured for 86 freezer-trawlers of type Tropik for the Soviet Union. Four further types were produced for GDR fishery vessels. The first years of controllable-pitch propeller production in Wismar centered on systems with a power rating of 1,930 kW for 199 freezer-trawlers of type Atlantik. A total of 230 controllable-pitch propeller systems were delivered up to the end of 1969.
Lürssen Group Buys the Peene shipyard
In a meeting of the creditor committee, and acting on the suggestion of the insolvency administrator, Berthold Brinkmann, P+S WERFTEN decided in favor of the Lürssen Group (Bremen) as the buyer of the Peene shipyard in Wolgast. This decision is subject to approval by the creditors holding liens on the property. The purchase agreement has already been concluded. As of May 1, 2013, the Lürssen Group will acquire the compact shipyard with its repair and new construction area. The purchase is also subject to approval by the Federal Cartel Office. Schottel Going Full Speed Ahead
Schottel ended the year 2003 with record sales. With 550 employees worldwide, the company continued the previous year’s trend, achieving sales in the new systems and service sectors totalling 90 million euro (2002: 81 million). Sales for the group were thus increased by 11%, and once again exports accounted for some 80% of the total. The extremely satisfactory volume of incoming orders in the last 12 months, amounting to some 88 million euro, means that 42 million euro of orders are on hand for the year 2004. Of particular significance are the latest worldwide sales successes in the areas of tug propulsion systems, offshore supply vessels, cruise ships, research vessels, ferries and military vessels.
L&T Negotiating $1B Shipbuilding Orders
India’s largest engineering and construction firm Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) is negotiating with global shipping fleet owners to build ships worth over $1b, but the company cannot finalize these orders because it still hasn’t received the requisite clearances for its shipyard from a local government. L&T plans to set up the country’s biggest shipbuilding facility at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu in an effort to tap growing domestic and global demand for ships. The company will invest around Rs3,000 crore in the shipyard and port project and will build cargo ships, warships and offshore oil rigs. The shipyard at Kattupalli will be capable of building 25 big ships in a year and repair another 50-60 ships.
HATLAPA Takes Over KGW Business Unit
As of April 1, 2006 the managing partners of HATLAPA Uetersener Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG (HATLAPA) took over the former business division “ship technology and cargo handling” of KGW Schweriner Maschinenbau GmbH (KGW) and integrated this into a newly founded company KGW Marine GmbH, located in Schwerin. Close to 20 KGW people, covering sales, design and development department as well as service and commissioning personnel, are going to stay with the new company, keeping responsibility for the existing orders. In doing so, the long-term future of the ship division’s product range of KGW is ensured. Within the last almost 15 years KGW Schweriner Maschinenbau GmbH has become one of the leading suppliers of wind mill towers.
