Rival of Container Shipper Matson Can Proceed with Antitrust Lawsuit

Two Matson Inc subsidiaries must face claims from rival container shipping company American President Lines LLC that Matson is abusing its market power over service from the United States to Guam, a federal judge ruled in an antitrust lawsuit.The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper in Washington, D.C., declined to dismiss claims against Matson Navigation Company Inc and Matson Logistics Inc brought by American President Lines last year seeking unspecified monetary damages for alleged violations of U.S. competition law.The court dismissed parent company Matson Inc as a defendant.Honolulu-based Matson, a leading U.S. carrier in the Pacific, in 2021 recorded revenue of more than $3.9 billion.

Cox Takes over as Matson Board Chairman

Matson, Inc. president and chief executive officer Matthew J. Cox will succeed retiring chairman of the board Walter A. Dods, the company announced today. The appointment becomes effective at the end of the company's annual shareholders’ meeting today, as Dods retires in accordance with the company's corporate governance guidelines limiting board members’ age. “In my nearly 30 years associated with Matson, I've never felt stronger about its leadership and long-term prospects,” Dods said.

Matson Launches China to New York LCL Service

Matson Logistics Supply Chain Services is expanding its less-than-container-load (LCL) capabilities by offering direct fast transit from China to the New York and New Jersey markets. The service is based on Matson’s China-Long Beach Express (CLX) service, which offers express Transpacific trade, and partners with JAD International for expedited coast-to-coast transport. “We listened to our clients’ needs and in collaboration with JAD International, we are proud to bring this premium service to the market,” said Jeffrey Ivinski, director of sales and marketing for Matson Logistics Supply Chain Services. “Matson created an alternative to costly air freight to the West Coast and now we are bringing expedited service to the important New York metro market.

Top US Shipping Execs to Receive USS Awards

Anthony Chiarello, Matthew J. Cox and James C. The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2015 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) will be presented to Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE; Matthew J. Cox, President/CEO of Matson Inc.; and James C. McKenna, President and CEO of Pacific Maritime Association. The maritime industry awards are to be presented at the 46th annual gala industry dinner and dance in New York on November 13, 2015. Recognition will also be given to American seafarers for specific acts of bravery and heroism while at sea.

Matson Senior VP Hoppes to Retire

Dave Hoppes, Matson’s senior vice president, ocean services, will retire March 31, 2015, the company announced. John Lauer, currently vice president, Transpacific services at the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., will succeed Hoppes as senior vice president, ocean services, effective March 31, 2015. The company also announced that Chris Scott, currently director, Asia at Matson Navigation Company, will succeed Lauer as vice president, Transpacific services at Matson Navigation Company, effective March 31, 2015, as part of the transition plan.

Matson Expands Savannah Operation

Part of regional boom in third-party logistics providers. Matson Logistics, a leading provider of multimodal transportation, warehousing, and distribution services throughout North America, has established new distribution center space in Savannah. “Our new operation expands on our ability to move retail goods in through the Port of Savannah,” said Mark Ferzacca, assistant vice president of sales for Matson Logistics Warehousing. Matson has contracted for 65,000 square feet, with the ability to increase to 125,000 square feet.

Matson Receives IT Initiative Award

Matson Inc. wins 2012 CIO 100 award from CIO magazine for exemplified operational & strategic IT performance . Ocean transportation and logistics company Matson wins the award a second time for its multi-year IT initiative, known as miLogistx, that was designed to support growth for its logistics subsidiary, Matson Logistics, Inc. Matson was one of four transportation companies honored this year, along with FedEx Corp., Amtrak and Old Dominion Freight Line. Other recipients included AT&T Services, IBM, Intel, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Verizon Wireless and the U.S. Department of Transportation. "Over the past decade, Matson Logistics had expanded through a combination of organic and acquisitive growth," said Peter Weis, vice president and chief information officer.
