Manson Awarded Floating Dry Dock Mooring Facility Contract at Naval Base San Diego

Seattle based Manson Construction Co. announced it has been selected as the contractor for the P-508 Floating Dry Dock Mooring Facility project.Awarded by Naval Facilities Command Southwest (NAVFAC SW), this $106.9 million project at Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) includes a new ramp pier, retrofitting the mooring wharf, and support facilities for Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) to directly support the operations and maintenance of a new floating dry dock.

The Navy is known for its big ships. It has a lot of smaller boats and craft, too—3,200 of them.The three primary stakeholders for these craft are the Surface Fleet, Commander Navy Installations Command and Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. Fuel Removed from Grounded Fishing Vessel

The U.S. Navy, in partnership with other federal and local agencies, removed approximately 540 gallons of the remaining diesel fuel from the grounded Japanese commercial fishing vessel Daiki Maru 7 in outer Apra Harbor Feb. 18. On Feb. 16, about 50 gallons of fuel was removed and an additional 540 gallons was removed Feb. 18. The diesel fuel was pumped into containers on shore and then staged in an environmentally safe containment zone for disposal. Additionally, four marine batteries and several fishing nets were safely removed.

Navy Rescue Fishing Vessel Crew, Prevent Guam Wreck Pollution

Sailors from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25 conducted a search and rescue operation and rescued 10 fishermen from a sinking commercial fishing vessel that ran aground in Apra Harbor near Spanish Steps, Guam. Subsequently Navy personnel removed environmentally hazardous materials from the wreck. "Through the efforts of HSC-25 and the U.S. Coast Guard, we were able to successfully meet our first priority, which was to rescue the crew members," said Capt. MSHIP to Team with Huntington Ingalls Industries' subsidiary, AMSEC LLC. under U.S. Navy's SEAPORT-E Electronic Procurement Program. New Navy Contracts

L-3 Services, Inc., Unidyne Division, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $46,670,682 indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity, cost plus fixed fee contract for engineering services to operate and maintain the Technology Center for Cables and Connectors (TC3) facility located at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division (NUWC), Newport. Efforts will include: TC3 facilities maintenance and operation, parts procurement and logistic services, fabrication services, research and development services, test and evaluation services, reliability maintainability availability services, programmatic support, and in-service engineering activity services in support of sensors and sonar systems.

Art Anderson Continues Seabasing Research

Art Anderson Associates has entered a new phase in one of its Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts with the U.S. Navy. In this phase, Art Anderson Associates will work to optimize the speed and throughput of the company-developed High-Speed Lighterage vessel required by amphibious military operational scenarios. Guidance from the Navy and the results of the analysis will determine specific design parameters for the vessel, allowing Art Anderson Associates and the Navy to proceed with vessel engineering and design. Art Anderson Associates has been under contract to the Naval Facilities Command, Sealift Support Office for research and design of the Improved Navy Lighterage System (INLS).

Navy Lab Hosting Event

The Navy’s Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) conducts a ribbon cutting at 1:00 p.m., August 13, 2002 for the 26 thousand square-foot Acoustic Test and Analysis Center (ATAC). Captain Steven W. Petri USN, Commander, Carderock Division, parent organization of ARD, welcomes Senator Larry Craig as the invited guest speaker. ATAC is the centerpiece of a major construction project, consolidating ARD offices, computer laboratories and industrial facilities into a single, modern facility. The project represents the culmination of the ARD's Facility Master Plan, which is transforming ARD from a collection of converted World War II-vintage boat repair shops and 1970-vintage buildings into a state-of-the-art test facility.

News Briefs

First Wave/Newpark Shipbuilding, in Galveston, Texas, has had a busy spring. First, the company was awarded a contract by Diamond Offshore Drilling to install a crane and perform annual survey work on Ocean Lexington. That contract was completed in March. Next, the company won a contract from Smit Americas, Inc. for drydocking of Ocean Hercules. The vessel was drydocked on the shipyard's 7,500-ton drydock for general maintenance and conversion from a seismic vessel to a telecommunication cable laying vessel. Finally, First Wave drydocked Pride Louisiana for Pride Offshore. The rig was docked in the Galveston Ship Channel, utilizing a heavy lift barge for an annual survey. The rig will depart upon completion of the survey.
