Bodies from Downed Plane Pulled from Sea off Indonesia
Indonesian rescuers searching for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people pulled bodies and wreckage from the sea off the coast of Borneo on Tuesday, prompting relatives of those on board watching TV footage to break down in tears. Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control early on Sunday during bad weather on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. The navy said 40 bodies had been recovered. The plane has yet to be found. "My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ8501," airline boss Tony Fernandes tweeted. Following a series of incidents and fatalities involving lifeboat hooks, InterManager, the international trade association for the ship management industry, has gathered comments from seafarers of various ranks in an online discussion forum. Crew members responded by pointing out that they believed the hook designs have not kept pace with developments in the global shipping industry.

Jeffrey Joyce, Director, Operational Training – British Columbia Ferry Services, Inc. A native of British Columbia, Jeff Joyce was accepted into the Canadian Navy in 1983 through the Regular Officer Training program and progressed through his post-secondary learning (B.Sc UBC) and Naval education, graduating from both in 1987. He completed his Certificate of Competency as a Bridge Watchkeeper, and then qualified as a Navigating Officer. Throughout his Naval career, Jeff excelled in many operational roles, but always felt most fulfilled when involved in training and education. He taught navigation and operations as a young Lieutenant, and then returned to the Naval Officers Training Center as the Senior Instructor and Head of Department.

Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.
