INTERCARGO and RightShip Launch Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence

The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) and RightShip have launched the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE), an independent, not-for-profit industry organisation dedicated to the administration of the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) framework.DryBMS was developed by INTERCARGO and RightShip, with input from experts and stakeholders across the sector, as an industry tool to raise standards and best practices across safety, security, environmental performance, and social welfare in the dry shipping sector.

Pacific Basin Chooses Graphene-Based Propeller Coating

Dry bulk shipping company Pacific Basin has decided to apply a sustainable graphene-based propeller coating XGIT-PROP, developed by Canadian company GIT Coatings, across its entire fleet.Following successful application and observing positive results on one of its Supramax dry bulk vessels, Pacific Basin has started the rollout of XGIT-PROP across 40 vessels scheduled for dry dock maintenance in 2024. This decarbonisation initiative marks the largest adoption of graphene-based propeller coating in the dry bulk segment.Sanjay Relan

Seafarer Abandonment Is on the Rise

Maritime Giants Launch Competition to Drive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Six giants in the global maritime industry have joined forces to address diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues.The Maritime Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Innovation Lab 2022, launched by Thome Group, Hafnia, Anglo American, RightShip, Rio Tinto, and Wilhelmsen, is an open competition for interested participants (individuals, institutions, companies, students etc.) to submit their ideas on addressing DEI in the maritime industry.Shortlisted teams will participate in the innovation lab to hone their pitches in preparation for a ‘Dragon’s Den’ session with industry leaders.

RightShip Expands Its Vetting Criteria

Risk assessment and due diligence firm RightShip said it has expanded its vetting criteria from 20 to 50 assessment factors, in a move aimed at improving consistency as well as industry safety standards."We have drilled down further in terms of incidents and PSC performance and looked at operator performance in more detail. RightShip Unveils New Safety Score

Maritime risk management and environmental assessment organization RightShip announced its new Safety Score and Platform has gone live, aiming to provide a clear and transparent pathway to improved safety standards for shipping.RightShip said it spent two years building and refining the Safety Score, a metric that enables the maritime industry to improve the safety of vessel operations. The Safety Score ensures there are minimum standards that all vessels must meet, as well as clear actions to take to improve a vessel’s score.

RightShip Launches New Safety Score

Maritime risk management and environmental assessment organization RightShip launched its new Safety Score in response to industry feedback that called for more transparent methods of assessing vessels.RightShip said it has spent the last two years working in collaboration with stakeholders from across the shipping industry. The new Safety Score provides a metric that is explainable, transparent and only includes factors which are in the control of the operator, to help support improved safety across the maritime sector.The Safety Score will be housed on the new RightShip Platform

300,000DWT Bulker Joins Berge Bulk Fleet

Singapore's dry bulk shipping company Berge Bulk has taken delivery of the second and newest 300,000DWT very large ore carrier (VLOC) in China.The new vessel, named Berge Mafadi, was delivered from the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) yard in Guangzhou, said a press note. With a ‘Rightship A+’ rating and an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) 20% below the baseline, she ranks amongst the most energy-efficient bulk carriers in the world.Berge Mafadi has been designed to carry a maximum cargo lift from Port Hedland as well as South Africa and Brazil.The vessel is named after a peak on the border of South Africa and Lesotho. At the height of 3,450m, Mafadi is the highest mountain in the nation of South Africa.

NAMEPA to Host ‘Pathways to Sustainability’

North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will hold its Environmental Intelligence in Shipping Conference on “Pathways to Sustainability” on Februar 5, 2016 at SeaRiver Maritime in Spring, Texas. The conference is designed to be a guide for navigating through the myriad of regulations leading to compliance. The maritime industry faces continual regulatory change as it strives to reduce its impact on the marine environment. NAMEPA members, in particular, are committed to “Save our Seas”, but this approach is not without its hurdles. Complex regulations require support to insure understanding and competence and to devise an appropriate strategy for each company. Discussion topics will include Global Projections for Shipping, Regulatory Outlook and Legal Hot Spots.

Star Bulk Carriers Reports 1Q Loss, Adds 3 Vessels.

The Athens, Greece-based Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (SBLK) has reported a loss of $48.8 million in its first quarter. The shipping company posted revenue of $46.3 million in the period. Star Bulk has added three vessels during this period. On April 1, April 4 and May 30, 2016, the vessels Indomitable, Obelix and Star Michele respectively, were delivered to their buyers. On June 6, 2016, it took delivery of the Newcastlemax vessel Star Libra (ex-HN 1372), which is financed under a bareboat charter accounted for as a capital lease, from CSSC (Hong Kong) Shipping Company Limited. On June 6, 2016, it  took delivery of the Capesize vessel Star Taurus (ex-HN 1339), which was sold to a third party pursuant to a preexisting agreement upon its delivery from the shipyard.

RightShip Appoints New CEO

RightShip, the world’s leading maritime risk management and environmental assessment organisation, has appointed its new CEO. Martin Crawford-Brunt will replace outgoing CEO Warwick Norman who announced his decision to step down from the position in 2017. Crawford-Brunt takes up his new post on 12 March 2018 and brings more than 20 years of maritime sector experience to RightShip. For the past decade he has held senior positions around the world, with a track record of successfully building businesses and delivering increased value to ship owners. He joins RightShip from DNV GL where he was responsible for leading significant change, transforming its business model and introducing innovative services. Martin will initially be based at RightShip’s London office.
