South Africa's Busiest Port Durban Hobbled by Strike

Final Containership Leaves Stockholm's Frihamnen Port

Unifeeder containership SCA Tunadal on Wednesday claimed the maiden call at Sweden’s newest freight port, Stockholm Norvik Port, following the completion of a long port construction project.The container terminal is now open, both for vessel calls and for shore-based business operations at the port. The 32 hectare container terminal is run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with 52 ports in 27 countries.Nine goods in 10 arrive in Sweden by sea, and the Stockholm region accounts for half of Sweden’s entire consumption.

Gothenburg Port Reaches Major Milestone

According to the Port of Gothenburg, an important milestone is reached in the largest development project at the Port of Gothenburg in 40 years.The first phase of the water-based work has now been completed and construction of the 220,000 square metre terminal is due to move on to the next phase. The terminal is expected to be completed by 2025.Construction of the brand-new terminal at the Port of Gothenburg got under way in autumn 2018. Ecoslops and Suez Canal Economic Zone Ink Second Agreement

Panama Canal Sets Record Annual Cargo Tonnage

Following the close of its 2017 fiscal year (FY17), the Panama Canal announced that the waterway welcomed a record 403.8 million Panama Canal tons (PC/UMS) of cargo in FY17, the largest amount of annual tonnage ever transited in its 103-year history. The 22.2 percent increase from the previous year can be directly attributed to the added capacity provided by the Expanded Canal. According to figures, the Panama Canal transited a total of 13,548 vessels during its FY17, representing a 3.3 percent increase compared to totals the year before.

More Cars Shipped Via The Port Of Gothenburg

During the first quarter of the year, new car exports and imports passing through the Port of Gothenburg rose by 12 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2016. The Port of Gothenburg became the number one vehicle handling port in Scandinavia, due largely to the rise in imports. The number of cars exported and imported through the Port of Gothenburg has grown steadily since 2012 and the trend appears to be holding. According to new figures released by the Swedish government agency Transport Analysis and the industry and employers’ organisation Ports of Sweden, 67,682 cars passed through the Port of Gothenburg during the first quarter of the year. This represents an increase of 12 per cent on the first quarter of 2016.

APM Terminals Pipavav welcomes its largest RoRo carrier

APM Terminals Pipavav welcomed the Hoegh Tracer, one of the world’s largest pure car and truck Carrier (PCTC), and the largest to ever call an Indian port. At 14 decks high, the Hoegh Tracer has a capacity of 8,500 vehicles, and loaded 1,700 cars at Pipavav for export delivery on the Hoegh Middle East, India and Africa (MIAF) Service. APM Terminals Pipavav, in partnership with NYK Auto Logistics (India), opened a dedicated common user integrated RoRo terminal in August of 2015, with a capacity of 250,000 vehicles annually. The port is equipped to accommodate 4,500 to 5,000 cars and a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) facility. There is also a mobilization yard for 150 cars, with a capacity to accommodate approximately 500 cars on the Quay.

Traffic Increase between Gothenburg and Belgium

Belgium is Sweden’s eighth largest export market. The Swedish shipping company SOL is about to expand its departure frequency between the Port of Gothenburg and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. The change will offer greater scope for Swedish import and export companies to ship freight to and from Belgium. Gothenburg-based shipping company Swedish Orient Line, SOL, is about to expand its departure frequency between Gothenburg and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. Intermodal terminal moves to Gothenburg Port

Plans are in place to move the freight terminal currently located in the central city of Gothenburg to the Port of Gothenburg. The switch will allow a higher proportion of transport by rail instead of road. At the intermodal terminal, in the city centre of Gothenburg, freight is transferred from rail to road and then distributed to companies throughout the region. At the beginning of 2018, the intermodal terminal will need to be moved to allow future development of the city. Following an agreement between the City of Gothenburg and the Swedish Transport Administration, it has now been confirmed that the terminal will be relocated to the Arken area next to Gothenburg Roro Terminal in the Port of Gothenburg.

Melbourne RoRo Terminal Opens

Melbourne International RoRo & Automotive Terminal (MIRRAT) will officially open at Webb Dock West in Melbourne on the 10th April, 2016. MIRRAT is dedicated to providing best in class terminal services to the Automotive and RoRo markets in Melbourne by providing efficient, innovative and sustainable solutions to our customers. As part of Port of Melbourne Corporation’s port capacity project, MIRRAT was awarded the rights to design, construct and operate the new RoRo & Automotive Terminal at Webb Dock West. Port of Bronka Prepares for Opening

Technical plant and equipment installation for the first stage of Bronka’s port facilities is now complete with the Liebherr LHM 800 mobile port crane installed at the end of September, bringing the port closer to operation. The deepwater Port of Bronka is located on the outskirts of St. Petersburg and lies on the Southern bank of the Gulf of Finland. Directly linked to the St. Petersburg orbital highway and the Russian rail network, the port features a multifunctional cargo handling facility comprising two terminals plus a logistics center.

Kalmar Machines for MIRRAT

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order from Australia's newest and largest automotive and RoRo terminal due to open in April 2016. The terminal has been designed, constructed and will ultimately be operated by the newly formed Melbourne International RoRo and Automotive Terminal Pty Ltd (MIRRAT). The order includes four Kalmar DCE330-RoRo forklifts for moving break bulk cargo both on the wharf and on board vessels, four Kalmar DCG160-12 forklifts also used for moving break bulk and assisting in R&D operations and four Kalmar TR618i terminal tractors modified for MIRRAT's requirements - entailing increased capacity, lowered height and special programming to enable weight distribution. The delivery of the twelve Kalmar machines is due late March through to early April 2016.

NYK's First RORO Terminal in S. Arabia

NYK signed a joint-venture agreement with Ports Development Company (PDC)* to establish NYK’s first exclusive RORO terminal operating company at King Abdullah port (KAP)** on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. This terminal named KAP RORO Terminal, which is the first exclusive RORO terminal in Saudi Arabia, is planned to commence full operations by 3rd quarter 2016. RORO Ops by NYK for Ford Plants in India

In 2011, NYK Auto Logistics (India) Pvt. Ltd.(NALI)* was awarded a contract by Ford India for RORO terminal services of finished cars at Chennai and Ennore Port. Based on the service quality, in 2015, NALI and Ford India extended the scope of services to cover Chennai plant stockyard management and inland transportation from plant to Chennai and Ennore ports. With this new scope of business, NALI can provid complete outbound logistics of finished vehicles for the Ford plant in Chennai. A part of exports from the Ford Chennai plant is also loaded on NYK vessels at Chennai port, extending the supply chain further to overseas dealers. The partnership with Ford India strengthened further when the scope of services for NALI was expanded to the new Ford plant in Sanand Gujarat.

First RoRo Ship Calls at Khalifa Port

The first scheduled Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) vessel, MV Dream Angel, berthed at the Khalifa Port RoRo terminal on Monday, January 5, heralding the transition of Abu Dhabi Ports’ RoRo cargo, from Zayed Port to Khalifa Port. Operated by Nissan Motor Car Carrier (NMCC), the MV Dream Angel arrived from the Port of Yokohama and Port of Kanda in Japan laden with 164 car units for Abu Dhabi Ports’ key customer Al Masaood Automobiles, one of the region’s main distributors for Nissan and Infiniti. The new vehicles will next be sent to car dealers across the UAE.

APM & NYK Plan RoRo facility at Pipavav

APM Terminals operated Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (APM Terminals Pipavav) and NYK Auto Logistics (India) today announced setting up of a dedicated automobile yard (RoRo) at Pipavav Port. Under the arrangement, NYK Auto Logistics (India) Pvt. Ltd. has been sub-leased land parcels by Gujarat Pipavav Port inside its premises for developing a dedicated common user integrated RoRo terminal with India’s first port based PDI and Vehicle Processing Center. Gujarat Pipavav Port will provide all the port and related facilities to the logistics operator for ensuring smooth and seamless flow of automobile cargo. Wallenius Wilhelmsen Wins Melbourne Bid

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) says that its subsidiary MIRRAT has been announced as winner in its bid to operate automotive terminal 'Melbourne Australia'. Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) have selected Melbourne International Ro-Ro Automotive Terminal (MIRRAT) for the development of the automotive and Roll-On Roll–Off (RoRo) terminal in Webb Dock West.
