Niels Aalund, Chairman of the Houston Maritime Museum, announced plans for the museum’s new home located at the Turning Basin at the Port of Houston. “Expanding the current museum and moving to the Port of Houston will allow us to better fulfill our mission,” Aalund said. Features of the new 38,000-square-foot maritime museum include a high tech interactive touch wall, extensive exhibit halls, classrooms, meeting spaces, event spaces, research library, children's area, museum store and a café/restaurant.

Blue skies and a cool breeze set the stage for a once-in-a-century event today: the 100th anniversary rededication of the opening of Houston's deep-water port. International Longshoremen's Association, Houston Pilots, U.S. Coast Guard, current and former Port Commissioners, industry stakeholders and others, attended the Houston Ship Channel Rededication at Brady's Landing overlooking the Houston Ship Channel. The event took place 100 years to the day of the original ceremony in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson fired a cannon by remote control from his office in Washington D.C. Katherine Lee Stacy, the great-great-granddaughter of Miss Sue Campbell, who took part in the original dedication ceremony by tossing a floral offering, reenacted the christening event.

Port industry veteran Don Allee will assume control of the Port’s Cruise and Tourism Division in January, following the retirement of current Director J. Robert Jumonville. Jumonville, who will retire in January after 25 years at the Port, oversaw the planning and construction of all three Julia St. Cruise Terminals, including the present consolidation of the two terminals into one modern terminal completed in 2011. The U.S. Coast Guard public meetings concern the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) proposal. The meetings are scheduled in accordance with the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Reader Requirements Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. The Coast Guard proposes to require owners and operators of certain vessels and facilities regulated by the Coast Guard to use electronic readers designed to work with the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) as an access control measure. This NPRM also proposes additional requirements associated with electronic TWIC readers, including recordkeeping requirements for those owners and operators required to use an electronic TWIC reader, and security plan amendments to incorporate TWIC requirements.

More than 4,500 personnel from 20 countries began a 12-day exercise in Panama City on Sept. 11 to train in a joint, multinational effort to ensure the security of the Panama Canal. The Houston Pilots Association christened the pilot boat M/V Bayou City at the Port of Houston Authority's Sam Houston Pavilion last month. "The addition of the M/V Bayou City to our fleet will greatly enhance our organization's total commitment to safety on the Houston Ship Channel and excellence in service to the maritime shipping industry," said Capt. Mike Morris, presiding officer of the pilots. The $6 million M/V Bayou City vessel measures 72 ft. in length with a breadth of 43 feet. It has a depth of 16 ft., a draft ranging from 10 to 12 ft., and can travel at a top speed of 21 knots. It is equipped with two 4,000-hp Caterpillar Series 3412 engines that have a fuel capacity of 7,500 gallons. The M/V Bayou City will be the fourth working vessel in the Houston pilots' fleet.

Aker Kvaerner will officially celebrate the expansion and state-of-the-art upgrade of its integrated subsea engineering and manufacturing facilities in Tranby, Norway on May 10. Aker Kvaerner invested NOK 65 million in 2006 and 2007 to develop the manufacturing operation into the world's most efficient subsea christmas tree manufacturing facility. Work on the facility has now been completed, just 12 months after Aker Kvaerner announced the investment. The new streamlined operations will increase Aker Kvaerner's ability to respond to customer needs with reduced lead times and more rapid execution. Aker Kvaerner Subsea has another two facilities coming on line this year.

Aker Kvaerner will officially open its new North Sam Houston Parkway facility in Houston on April 25. The new purpose built facility will include operational support of three main activities; drilling equipment, well intervention technology and subsea systems. It will be the primary centre for assembly, testing and aftermarket activity for Aker Kvaerner's oil field operations in the Gulf of Mexico. The facility includes advanced laboratories for assembly of electronic and hydraulic technology, pressure testing for ultra-deepwater applications and a pit for underwater testing of deepwater trees and pumps.
