SHI Eyes Russia's $3Bn LNG Carrier Order

South Korea shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) may receive an order from Russia’s largest independent gas producer Novatek for 10 additional ice-breaking LNG carriers worth US$3Bn.A report by Business Korea said Novatek has asked the Russian Government to approve its plan to place an order at an “overseas shipyard”.If the Russian government approves the scheme, the number of LNG carriers to be used for Russia’s Arctic LNG project will increase to 25, including the 15 units that will be built by Zvezda, a state-run Russian shipyard, the report said.The Russian government earlier allowed Zvezda to build the 15 units jointly with a foreign partner…

Russian flagged vessels in Russia to be managed by V. Group

V.Group has taken its first Russian flagged vessel into full technical management following earlier successful accreditation of the St.Petersburg office from the Russian Register. The ship management services, which will be delivered by V.Ships operations in Limassol and BGI crewing operations in St. Petersburg, are a significant milestone, marking V.Group’s entry into this market. The vessel – UMBA – owned by RPK Nord is permanently stationed in Murmansk and following successful inspection from one oil major that took place immediately after the change of management, she is supporting the oil industry as a storage tanker. Brazilian Shipbuilder Urges Russia to Strengthen Maritime Ties

WSS Receives Approvals for Safety Service

Class approvals and new training centres strengthen WSS safety service offering. Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has received vital approvals for its safety service from two of the world’s Classification Societies: Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and RINA (Royal Institute of Naval Architects). Bureau Veritas Extends Russian partnerships

Bureau Veritas is extending its partnerships in the Russian shipping and offshore sector, focussing on High Arctic offshore projects. Bureau Veritas and the Russian Register are working together to provide basic design review for the Shtokman FPU for the two tenderers: SAIPEM, SAMSUNG and SOFEC (SSS) and AKER, TECHNIP and SBM (ATS). The process has called for a comparison between BV and RS rules, design review and documentation review, and performance of thermal, linear and non-linear hydrodynamic and structural calculations with VeriSTAR Hull.

ABB Power2 Completes Type Testing

ABB Turbocharging recently celebrated a milestone in its two stage turbocharging systems. Having equipped the first gas engine to enter commercial service with “Power2” two stage turbocharging equipment, ABB Turbocharging has now carried out Type Testing on a Power2 system in the presence of the Classification Societies on a hot gas test rig at its Technical Center in Baden, Switzerland. In this way, Power2 has passed a major milestone on its way to gaining Type Approval for use on 4-stroke, medium speed marine diesel engines. The Type Test of Power2 took place in early March 2011.

BV, Russian Register Sign Agreement

Bureau Veritas (BV) and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) signed a three-year co-operation agreement covering the development of joint guidelines for LNG carriers and Offshore Floating Production Units (FPUs). ABS And Russian Register Sign New Bilateral Agreement

A new bilateral agreement that extends the long-standing agreement on cooperation between ABS and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has been signed by the two societies in St Petersburg (Russia).
