Germany-based inland waterway shipping firm HGK Shipping has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hydrogenious LOHC Maritime and Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies to work on developing a scalable solution to make hydrogen available as a source of energy on a large scale. A trio of companies -- Alma Clean Power, Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies and Hydrogenious LOHC Maritime -- announced a joint development agreement to engineer a fully integrated LOHC-SOFC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier-Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) power system for the Enova supported project HyNjord, focusing on a 100-kW pilot powertrain to be demonstrated on board the Østensjø Rederi operated offshore supply vessel Edda Ferd. The agreements also open up for hydrogen-powered vessels on megawatt-scale later.

Horizon Europe, the EU's key funding program for research and innovation, will fund the Ship-aH2oy project aimed at developing and demonstrating a zero-emission propulsion technology on board ships using green hydrogen from liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) on a megawatt scale. The European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has informed the consortium of 17 partners that they will be granted 15 million euros, with the project period being five years).

Hornblower Group announced on Wednesday it has acquired two offshore vessels: the Seaward Explorer and Seaward Endeavor, previously the California Responder and Pacific Responder, respectively. Seaward Services, Inc. Birkenhead based IPS Marine Fabrications is continuing to ramp up growth in the passenger ferry market after completing work on two Stena Line vessels. The firm, run by maritime engineering specialists Paul Smith and Peter Hillan, has delivered a package of insulation and fabrication work for the Stena Ro-Pax Superfast ferries VII and VIII. All repairs were completed on the move while the vessels continued service between Belfast and Cairnryan in Ireland, ensuring no operational downtime.

Cenovus Energy Inc , Canada's No.2 independent oil producer, said on Friday it has received regulatory approval for its Telephone Lake oil sands project, a facility that could eventually produce more than 300,000 barrels of oil per day. The company said the Alberta Energy Regulator and the provincial government approved the thermal oil sands project, which will pump steam into oil sands deposits to liquefy the tar-like bitumen so it can flow to the surface. Cenovus said Telephone Lake will be developed in stages, with a 90,000 bpd initial phase, followed by expansions. However, it will not make a final decision on whether to proceed with construction until next year.

Birkenhead  based engineering firm IPS Marine Fabrications has completed a series of contracts for three ship operators. IPS director Paul Smith said the contracts with Whitaker Tankers, and ferry operators Seatruck and Stena showcased the broad range of fabrication and insulation skills IPS can provide. “The job spec of these contracts was really varied and shows how we can save customers time and money,” he said. “For Seatruck we supplied high temperature ceramic fiber insulation for the main engine exhausts.

PBL 3421 was delivered by Raymond & Associates, LLC, Bayou La Batre, AL, to Progressive Barge Line, Inc., New Orleans. PBL 3421 is the first of two barges, both 297.5  x 54 x 12 ft. inland service double skin tank barges, each witha cargo capacity of about 4700 short tons at 11.5 ft. draft. The barges are certified by the U. S. Coast Guard as Type I, Type II or Type III hulls for 1.05 or lower specific gravity products and will be used in Progressive Barge Line’s operations on the Gulf Coast.

The Kongsberg Maritime Simulation & Training department has developed a Green Ship Engine Room Simulator (ERS) model based on a Wärstilä 12RT-flex 82C low-speed common-rail engine, built for a Panamax container ship of 4800 TEU, with reefer capacity of 800. The scenario for the simulated ship model is a modern Green Ship that is financed and operated by a ship owner who is concerned about environmental issues, and who has built a fuel efficient / low-emission container ship using well-proven, commercially available technical solutions.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued a summary of its preliminary examination of a fire that occurred on a ro-ro passenger ferry in Pembroke on July 30, 2008. The fire was the result of thermal oil leaking from the heater coils into the thermal oil heater’s furnace. Although the damage was not serious, the fire was exacerbated by the lack of means to close off the air intake and the lack of a place in the system for injecting an extinguishing medium.

ATB tugs currently under construction at Eastern’s Allanton facility. The vessel is designed and engineered by Guarino & Cox of , and is classed under the ABS rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels Under 295 ft. in length. This series of 150-ft. ATB tugs offers several unique design features including an articulated tug and barge (ATB) connection system provided by Intercon. The vessel is capable of being powered by both heavy fuel oil as well as # 2 marine diesel fuel oil.

A contract covering the design of a 4,200dwt oil product tanker has been won by NVC -Design. It represents the first ship to be built to a concept developed by Rolls-Royce, a design which combines a tailor-made hull design with a diesel mechanical propulsion system based on twin Ulstein Aquamaster Azipull azimuth thrusters with pulling propellers. This design has been given the type number NVC 604 PT. The vessel has been contracted by Norway's Bergen Tankers AS, and it will be built by RMK Marine Shipyard in Turkey, scheduled for delivery in September 2005. The first of a series of 12,000 hp ATB tugs being built for U.S. Shipping Partners, L.P. was recently launched. But the occasion was devoid of the usually expected thrill and large splash. The building site lacked suitable launching ways so a different, somewhat less dramatic, method was devised. Using multiple tired high capacity transporters the tug was rolled onto a barge, then towed to a graving dock. The graving dock was drained to allow the tug to be freed from the then ballasted barge. The dock was then filled with about as much excitement as turning a tap to fill a tub allowing the tug to float free in its element. Guarino & Cox, L.L.C.
