SNA Concludes Annual Symposium
The Surface Navy Association (SNA) concluded its 29th annual three-day symposium in Arlington, Virginia, Jan. 12. The symposium focused on distributed lethality to enable sea control and facilitated professional discussions between military members, industry representatives and lawmakers regarding surface warfare technology, tactics, training and career development. The first day commenced with welcomes, roundtable discussions and keynote addresses by Navy leaders, including Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. William Moran and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steven Giordano. Vice Adm. Thomas Rowden, commander, Naval Surface Forces/Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, detailed his new Naval Surface Force Strategy and related it to the symposium's objectives.
Admiral Explains LCS Survivability to Senate Committee
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert has assured members of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) Committee on the survivability of the littoral combat ship (LCS). Alongside Secretary Ray Mabus the two defended the need for 52 small surface combatants in front of the SASC and in front of media following their testimony. The secretary emphasized how LCS costs have been driven down and Greenert responded to questions on LCS survivability, informs CNO Public Affairs, Washington.
Conference to Address Future of Naval Warships
Naval officers and industry experts will gather in Portsmouth, U.K., Jan. 30-31 for the IQPC Surface Warships 2014 conference to share ideas and concepts for designing, building, manning and maintaining naval combatants today and into the future. The opening keynote address will be delivered by U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas Rowden, the director for surface warfare on the chief of naval operations staff. Speakers from the Royal Navy will discuss the U.K.’s new Type 26 frigate program from the government acquisition industry design and construction, and operations point of view. Of emphasis will be the U.K. approach to open architecture in the Type 26 and other ship programs.
New Warship 'Zumwalt' Towed to Outfitting Berth
Rear Adm. "Water under the keel marks an important milestone for this 600 ft, 15,000 ton, 78 mega-watt ship and it brings PCU Zumwalt and her sister ships, Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) & Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002), one step closer to operating with the fleet. Commencing activation in 2014 and joining the fleet in 2016, PCU Zumwalt is a multi-mission warship designed, built and netted to execute Maritime Security, Sea Control and Power Projection missions, including Undersea and Strike Warfare.
Naval Oceanographers, Aerographers Deploy With ESL
A team of naval oceanographers and aerographer’s mates from Fleet Survey Team and Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) located at Stennis Space Center, Miss., are currently aboard USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) during their 2006 Gulf of Guinea deployment. The group's mission is to establish and build relations with the various countries of west Africa by sharing resources and data with local hydrographers and learning from them, as well, for future endeavors.
