On Saturday, September 7 , the launching of Izaro was held at the premises of Zamakona Yards in Bilbao. This vessel is a tuna freezer of 1,900 m3 and belongs to the Echebastar Group. The investment is 30 million Euros and the delivery is scheduled for January 2014. This is the first ship of a new generation of tuna fishers, designed and developed by the Naval Engineering Department Cintranaval - Defcar SL in cooperation with Echebastar. The ship is designed for tuna fishing by the system to purse seine of fishing grounds in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific ocean.

In an effort help generate support for the United Seamen’s Service (USS), Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has established a company-wide fundraising drive in which the company will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all donations made by MLL employees to USS from February through October 2009. MLL will then present a check for the matching amount in November to the USS at the annual Admiral of the Ocean (AOTOS) dinner in New York City. United Seamen’s Service is a non-profit organization that provides services for American merchant mariners and international seafarers. Since 1942, USS has operated centers around the world where mariners have access to services such as counseling, food, recreation, communication and health articles.

Veson Nautical, the US-based developer of software solutions for the commercial maritime community, announced that Fednav Limited of Montreal, a Canadian ocean-going, dry-bulk ship owning, operating and chartering group, has chosen to implement the full complement of Veson Nautical’s Integrated Maritime Operations System (IMOS). Fednav Limited will implement IMOS to manage their chartering and operations departments worldwide as well as link IMOS to their present accounting system, Oracle Financials. IMOS will handle all voyage operations for Fednav’s fleet, which concentrate on the transportation of bulk and breakbulk cargoes on a worldwide basis. Signet Maritime Corp. and Garrett Marine, Inc. executed agreements August 29, 2003, for charter and purchase of Garrett's Aransas tug business, finalizing plans that originated in 2002 to expand Signet's presence in the Aransas Pass/Ingleside region. The Garrett family, which has been serving marine tug needs in Texas for almost 50 years, agreed to terms for handing over responsibility for tug operations to Signet for marine and construction firms in the Aransas Pass/Ingleside region. Andy Garrett, Vice President of Garrett Marine, noted the consolidation of Garrett's tugs into Signet's fleet as "the most important task we have undertaken to enhance tug support to the Aransas Region and for our valued customers.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced continued progress in rebuilding the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast’s transportation system, including the return of passenger flights to the area and the arrival of the first Department of Transportation ship to aid recovery efforts. “Every day we are making more progress in repairing the transportation systems destroyed by Hurricane Katrina,” Mineta said. Commercial flights began serving the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport today, the first since the airport was severely damaged last Monday. Northwest and Mesa Airlines each flew one round-trip flight between Mississippi’s Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport and Memphis, Tennessee.
