FMC Accepting Applications for National Shipper Advisory Committee

Partners DNV GL, Kongsberg Maritime and Subsea 7 have concluded the pilot testing of Kongsberg Maritime’s (KM) DP Digital Survey (KMDS) application on board the Subsea 7 vessel Seven Kestrel.The pilot tested the use of a remote digital verification tool for testing dynamic positioning (DP) systems as part of classification society DNV GL’s D-Class project.In March 2019,  DNV GL rolled out the first fleet-wide remote survey scheme for some inspections in the classification industry.

Wondering What to Trim? Look to the skies: billions in offshore savings may be orchestrated from the back office. For many managers (and analysts), sales, general and administrative costs, or SG&A, are ordinary accounting lines on an offshore services company’s ledger. Less ordinary — less known — is that a sizable chunk of the “A” in SG&A are travel costs that can be better managed. A recent restructuring-focused Deloitte report suggested that SG&A costs might be the wisest costs to shed without thwarting operations. NOAA: Marine Debris Costs California Millions

Southern California residents lose millions of dollars each year avoiding littered, local beaches in favor of choosing cleaner beaches that are farther away and may cost more to reach, according to a new NOAA-funded Marine Debris Program economics study. Reducing marine debris even by 25 percent at beaches in and near California’s Orange County could save residents roughly $32 million during three months in the summer by not having to travel longer distances to other beaches.

Security Awareness en Designated Security Duties

As one of a few training institutes in the Netherlands, Rood Boven Groen has been certified by ILT to teach the new IMO recognized training Security Awareness en Designated Security Duties according to STCW’78 including the 2010 Manila amendments. After successful completion of the course the participants will receive the certificate for either Security Awareness or Designated Security Duties. From the January 1, 2014 both certificates are compulsory for all crew on ships sailing under the ISPS Code. From November 5-8, 2013, Rood Boven Groen offers the course Security Awareness training for the first time in combination with the basic safety training in Enkhuizen (The Netherlands). This is the basic, minimum training for all seafarers.

New ECDIS Course Allows Captains to Train Own

Training the trainer introduces significant cost and time efficiencies. Kongsberg Maritime has launched a new ECDIS Instructor Training course designed to train Captains and senior personnel, so they can train other officers and crew members in familiarization of Kongsberg ECDIS on board vessels. Offered in Norway and Singapore, the course is in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). It is a unique approach to type-specific ECDIS training and has been developed as a response to new IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations and demand for certification in the use of ECDIS, resulting in an increasing requirement for ECDIS training.

Wartsila Opens New Facility in Helsinki

Wärtsilä has opened new workshop facilities in Helsinki, Finland. The new facilities enable Wärtsilä to offer a wide range of workshop services with rapid response times. Operations in Helsinki began in early August 2011. "The new workshop is strategically located near the main shipping routes and this, together with its efficient storage arrangements, will significantly enhance our service capacity. For customers with maintenance agreements, the added component storage will reduce transportation and travel costs, and ensure prompt response times for vessels operating in the Baltic area," says Christoph Vitzthum, Group Vice President, Wärtsilä Services.

Transas GMDSS Simulator Installed in Australian Maritime College

An installation of Transas GMDSS Simulator TGS 5000 has been completed in the Australian Maritime College (Launceston). Supplied, installed and supported by Transas partner Electrotech Australia, the system provides flexible teaching arrangements for classes of up to 24 students through the utilisation of two instructor stations interfaced to fifteen student stations. The system is remotely supported through VPN access, minimising travel costs for maintenance and upgrades. The system is capable of simulating a comprehensive range of GMDSS equipment, including Sailor 5000 and earlier versions.

Isle of Man Boosts Appoints of Surveyor

The Isle of Man ship Registry has significantly boosted its presence in Asia with the appointment of Geoff Hutcheon (pictured) as its Surveyor in Singapore to serve shipowners in the growing Asia Pacific markets. Geoff Hutcheon will be based in Singapore to cover the statutory requirements for ISM/ISPS/ILO and Flag State Inspections (FSI) on merchant vessels predominantly in the Asia Pacific region, but may also cover other geographical areas as and when required. KVH TracPhone, Broadband for DSD Shipping

DSD Shipping AS of Stavanger, Norway, is the latest commercial maritime operation to take advantage of the broadband access and affordable service offered by KVH Industries, Inc. via its compact TracPhone V7 satellite communications system and the mini-VSAT Broadband(SM) service. DSD Shipping recently completed a successful trial on the Stavanger Viking and is now moving ahead with the installation of KVH's 24-inch (60 cm) TracPhone V7 antenna on its nine remaining vessels. Once all the installations are complete, DSD Shipping crew members will have multiple voice lines along with broadband Internet, e-mail, and data access onboard as they travel throughout the mini-VSAT Broadband network's expanding global coverage area.

MERPAC Seeks Applicants

The Coast Guard is actively seeking applications for appointment to the Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee (MERPAC). MERPAC gives advice and makes recommendations to the Coast Guard on matters pertinent to all personnel in the maritime industry, such as training, licensing, and certification and the on-going reorganization at the National Maritime Center. Travel costs for attending the committee meetings are covered by the Coast Guard. Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. EDT on July 15, 2009. Government Required Maritime Security Training Programs Now Available in Video Tape for Ports and S

SeaSecure LLC, has created, in partnership with Moxie Media, the first comprehensive ISPS Code and MTSA-compliant maritime security training program designed specifically for seaports and shipping companies to meet both US and international regulatory requirements. Houston Marine Training Teams Up with MGI

Houston Marine Training Services has partnered with MGI International Inc., of Vancouver, BC, Canada, to provide Computer Based Training (CBT) delivery of the classroom-theoretical portions of STCW-Basic Safety Training. An impetus for this deal is the urgency for mariners to comply with international regulations of the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), as under current traditional training delivery parameters, it is expected that 60 - 80 percent of companies will be compliant with STCW by February 1, 2002. The availability of this training in a CBT format will increase the training capacity to meet the demands currently facing the maritime industry. The CBT program is approved by the U.S.
