ABB Turbocharging Previews Marine Auxiliary Product

ABB Turbocharging, at the CIMAC Congress 2016 presented its first dedicated turbocharger, for marine auxiliary engine applications, in a development cooperation with IHI Corporation. Designed for ease of operation and service, it supports a condition-based maintenance concept. The Marine Auxiliary Power (MXP) turbocharger is a key part of the company's strategy to focus on increased value for engine builders and operators in the large engine industry through segment- and application-specific turbocharging offerings.

When it comes to turbocharging technology, the focus in the marine market is now more and more on efficiency and emissions reduction rather than outright power production, so the scope for new and innovative thinking on how to meet these new targets is wide ranging, according to developer and manufacturer KBB, a group with over 60 years’ experience and more than 60,000 units produced. KBB said it is responding to these ongoing challenges for engine owners and managers by improving performance and reducing lifecycle costs.

ABB Turbocharging: Prepping for Growth in China

At the Marintec 2011 marine trade show in Shanghai, ABB Turbocharging announced its latest move: the start of production in China of its most modern high pressure single stage turbocharger for low speed 2-stroke engines, the A100-L. ABB Turbocharging’s involvement in the Chinese market started in December 1978 with the conclusion of a license agreement with the organization that subsequently became its joint venture partner, Chongqing Jiangjin Turbo & Charger Machinery Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.

ABB Power2 Completes Type Testing

ABB Turbocharging recently celebrated a milestone in its two stage turbocharging systems. Having equipped the first gas engine to enter commercial service with “Power2” two stage turbocharging equipment, ABB Turbocharging has now carried out Type Testing on a Power2 system in the presence of the Classification Societies on a hot gas test rig at its Technical Center in Baden, Switzerland. In this way, Power2 has passed a major milestone on its way to gaining Type Approval for use on 4-stroke, medium speed marine diesel engines. The Type Test of Power2 took place in early March 2011.

MTU 1163 Series Meets IMO 2 & 3 Emissions Standards

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH will upgrade its Series 1163 marine engines for the IMO 2 and IMO 3 emissions regulations. “The 1163 family will be carrying on its success story and the future version will be even cleaner and more fuel-efficient than the present engine generation,” said Rainer Breidenbach, Tognum Executive Board member with responsibility for the Business Unit Engines. Wärtsilä, ABB, HUG to Develop Emissions Technology

In an extension of their existing cooperation in the development of two-stage turbocharged medium speed diesel engines, Finnish power solutions provider Wärtsilä and Swiss turbocharging specialist ABB Turbo Systems intend to cooperate with a third partner, aftertreatment specialist Hug Engineering, based in Elsau, Switzerland. The object of the new joint project is to develop an innovative compact selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system especially tailored to operation with two-stage turbocharging. Under the envisaged agreement, Wärtsilä, ABB Turbo Systems and HUG Engineering will target a further expansion of flexible engine operation at reduced NOx emissions and optimized fuel consumption, as well as targeting savings in first and life cycle costs.

Wärtsilä, ABB Turbo Develop Emissions Technology

The 2-stage turbocharging technology being tested on a 20-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 engine in the laboratory in Vaasa, Finland. Wärtsilä and ABB Turbo Systems are co-operating in a joint development program for a new application of two-stage turbocharging on large diesel engines. Advanced engine technology, together with two-stage turbocharging, offers significant advantages in fuel consumption and engine emissions. The application of two-stage turbocharging technology on Wärtsilä diesel engines has been developed through close co-operation between Wärtsilä and ABB Turbo Systems.
