AMP Demands Retraction of Jones Act Report

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP), the voice of the domestic maritime industry, today released a statement in response to the sheer number of factual errors in the recent report published by the Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure’s (Aii) – Jones Act: Protectionism v. Global Trade. “The publication is littered with fabrications intended to mislead policymakers and we demand a retraction of the report," said Tom Allegretti, Chairman of AMP. “It is shocking that a nonprofit organization led by former senior members of the U.S. military would produce such a factually inaccurate report and take such a myopic view of an important national security issue. They have failed to even acknowledge the fact that the U.S.

DHS Selects Stevens Institute for Maritime Research

Stevens Institute of Technology has been selected as the lead institution for a new Center of Excellence for Maritime Research (CMR). The selection, announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate will provide Stevens with $2 million per year for 5 years. The Center will also include the following partner institutions: MIT, University of Miami, Rutgers University, University of Puerto Rico and Elizabeth City State University. Stevens also has new partners with which it will collaborate on research projects, including LSU, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Connecticut.

Stevens Selected as Maritime Research Center of Excellence

Stevens Institute of Technology announced it has been selected as the lead institution for a new Center of Excellence for Maritime Research (CMR). Crowley Maritime Corporation awards 17-year-old Coraly Lopez Ortiz its 2012 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship. Coraly Lopez Ortiz, has begun her first year of college at University of Puerto Rico (UPR), thanks in part to the support of Crowley Maritime Corporation. Her parents' medical ailments have kept them from working since 2010, but her strong academic record and commitment to pursuing an education despite tough financial circumstances have prevailed with the help of the scholarship.

Crowley Celebrates Puerto Rico's Best and Brightest

Crowley's commitment to support exemplary students continued this month, as the company awarded the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial scholarship to University of Puerto Rico student Jan C. Nieves Rolón of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. He is the 26th student in Puerto Rico to be awarded a Crowley scholarship. Nieves Rolón, who boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average in high school, has enrolled as an accounting major at the university's Humacao, Puerto Rico campus. Rita Gonzalez, director of human resources at Crowley's Puerto Rico office, presented Nieves with the scholarship check.

Crowley's Nazario Elected VP of PR Shipping Association

Jose Francisco Nazario, Crowley's finance director in Puerto Rico, was elected vice president of the Puerto Rico Shipping Association during a recent meeting in Puerto Rico. Nazario was previously secretary of the organization and is an official member of the association's Silver Anchor Club. Nazario, who earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, with a major in accounting from the University of Puerto Rico, has more than 26 years of experience in the maritime industry. Through his involvement with the association, he remains committed to achieving the association's main objectives, which are to study and solve the common issues that affect the stevedoring and shipping companies, its agents and suppliers doing business in Puerto Rico.
