IACS Announces LR's Nick Brown as Incoming Council Chair

The International Association of Classification Societies has named Lloyd’s Register CEO Nick Brown as its Incoming Council Chair.Brown will take up the role on July 1 this year, marking the first time that the IACS Chair has been chosen by the Association’s Members and not by rotation, a move that follows governance changes announced in December last year. As part of those changes, Brown’s term of office will run until December 31, 2023.“I am honored to have been named Chair of the International Association of Classification Societies,” Brown said.

Final Gates Shipment Arrives to Panama Canal

The final shipment of gates has arrived to the Panama Canal today for the new locks as part of the canal’s expansion project. The four gates arrived on board the Post-Panamax vessel Xia Zhi Yuan 6 owned by COSCO Ocean Shipping, after a 25-day voyage from the Port of Trieste in Italy. The four gates arrived to the temporary dock located in the Atlantic side. Panama Canal Receives Third Shipment of Gates for Expansion

The four gates arrived Sunday on board the Post-Panamax vessel Xia Zhi Yuan 6 owned by COSCO Ocean Shipping. The shipment began its journey from Trieste, Italy on August 17 before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to reach the entrance of the Panama Canal, where they will be unloaded onto a special temporary dock. Only one shipment is left to receive all 16 gates required for the Third Set of Locks project. These gates will be used in the new locks at the Pacific side of the Canal. Two of the gates are 57.6 m long, 10 m wide and 31.92 m high, and weigh 4,163 tons each.

China Firm Buys Scana Machinery Co. Stake

Norway Headquartered Scana Industrier ASA has entered into an "Equity Sale and Purchase Agreement" with Leshan Zhi Yuan Gao Di Mining Co. Ltd. regarding a sale of Scanas 80% equity share interest in Leshan Scana Machinery Co. Ltd. The new owner will immediately take responsibility for daily operation of the company together with the existing organization, and will take responsibility for the companys obligations, say Scan Industrier. Leshan Scana Machinery is located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, China. "The transaction will gradually strengthen Scanas capital base through cash inflow and reduced debt. The "Equity Sale and Purchase Agreement" is now to be approved by Chinese authorities.

Keppel AmFELS on Course for Delivery of Jackup Rig

Keppel AmFELS Inc., is expected to deliver the first of its five jackup rigs on time and within budget for Scorpion Offshore Ltd. Keppel AmFELS launched the premium rig Offshore Courageous on November 4, 2006, which marked the completion of the hull works, a major milestone in its construction of the jackup. Ho Cheok Yuen, President and CEO of Keppel AmFELS, said, “We are committed to our delivery schedule for Offshore Courageous, and I am pleased that we are progressing as planned for our first rig for Scorpion Offshore. The other four Scorpion rigs are named Offshore Defender, Offshore Resolute, Offshore Vigilant and Offshore Intrepid. All five rigs are built to the LeTourneau Super 116 design, with leg lengths of 477 ft.
