Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up in January
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 2,468,706 tons in January, an increase of 14.4 percent compared to a year ago, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reported. Shipments were 10.3 percent below the month’s 5-year average, howerver.
Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Down in September
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 5,258,269 tons in September, a decrease of 5.6 percent compared to a year ago, the Lake Carriers’ Association reported. Shipments trailed the month’s five-year average by even more, 15.3 percent. Shipments from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 4,916,787 tons in September, an increase of 60,544 tons, or roughly one load in a 1,000-foot-long U.S.-flag laker.
Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Dips 15% in July
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 5.6 million tons in July, a decrease of 15 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). Shipments also trailed the month’s fuve-year average by more than 18 percent. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 4.95 million tons in July, a decrease of nearly 14 percent compared to a year ago, while loadings at Canadian terminals dipped even more – 23 percent – to 643,000 tons, LCA said.

Loadings at U.S. ports totaled 5.5 million tons, a decrease of 7 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments from Canadian ports in the Seaway totaled 695,000, an increase of 19 percent, but in terms of tons, the trade rose perhaps five cargos for the month.

Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 61.6 million tons in 2012, a slight improvement over 2011. The increase, 245,000 tons, is equal to about four cargos in a 1,000-foot-long vessel operating at current drafts which are significantly reduced by the dredging crisis and falling water levels.
