Burling, a Kiwi, wins SailGP in a showdown with British sailors
Peter Burling's New Zealand crew gatecrashed what was supposed to be a triumphant celebration at home, beating Dylan Fletcher’s British team in an exciting final of the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix.
The Kiwis spoilt the party in the Solent by claiming their second race win and third event victory of the weekend. It was a dramatic showdown where the winner took it all, leaving the crowd on the Portsmouth shoreline deflated.
The fleet was greeted by perfect sailing conditions. A nice, steady breeze provided ideal racing weather. This allowed the F50 foiling catsamarans that reach speeds up to 100 km/h on the water to show off their full potential.
Fletcher’s Emirates GBR had appeared to be destined for victory after dominating the leaderboard on the first day. However, they were beaten at the finish line when it counted the most. The Olympic gold-medallist rued what could have been.
The Swiss made history when they reached their first SailGP Final. However, their fairytale run ended in tragedy due to technical glitches that knocked them out of the final.
After a farcical restart caused by a spectator boat that invaded the course, the drama of the day didn't end with the final. France also won Race 6 after recovering from its own technical problems.
The twelve national teams competed in seven fleet races to earn coveted places in the final three-boat race. Emirates GBR emerged as the winner, followed by New Zealand, Switzerland and the rest of the pack. Fans were buzzing with excitement along the shore.
New Zealand topped the SailGP leaderboard overall with 54 points. Australia (BONDS flying Roos), on 52 points, and Spain, on 51 points were just behind. Britain continues to wait for its first home event win, despite having a long list SailGP podiums all over the world. (Editing by Toby Davis).
