Canada's Champagne: Ministers of G7 not'skating' around tariff issue
Francois-Philippe champagne, Canada's finance minister, said that discussions about tariffs were held during the G7 meeting of financial leaders. This was despite the fact that they had been mentioned in the final communiqué.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Champagne, the G7 Finance Leaders' Chair, addressed reporters at a press briefing.
The tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Canada and the other G7 countries have already started to hurt these economies and disrupt global trade. There was some speculation about whether or not there would be a common ground reached with U.S. Treasury Sec. Scott Bessent in attendance.
"We're trying to boost growth and stability and tariffs are something that you cannot avoid discussing in this context," he said. (Reporting and editing by David Lawder; Promit Mukherjee)
