EU proposes Black Sea Maritime Security Hub

Posted to Maritime Reporter on May 28, 2025

The European Union proposed Wednesday creating a center to enhance security in the Black Sea, by collecting information from different countries and monitoring the region more closely.

This move comes at a time when European officials are warning about the continued threat of Russia, and concerns about undersea infrastructure in Europe are growing.

A document from the EU stated that the hub would be created in the near future and with a "sense of urgency due to the Russian aggression war".

Documents stated that the hub would use contributions from Black Sea countries and EU nations to "enhance maritime awareness and information-sharing on the Black Sea", real-time monitoring of the seabed from space, and early alert.

In the proposal of the European Commission, the chief of foreign policy for the EU Kaja Kallas states that the hub will include monitoring submarine cables, offshore installation and gas and wind power operations.

The company said that it would also use surveillance drones and remotely-piloted vessels, as well as underwater sensors.

Kallas said to reporters that the hub would also be able to monitor the maritime component of a future agreement between Russia Ukraine. (Reporting and editing by Kirby Donovan; Lili Bayer)
