Germany takes additional measures to combat Russia's "shadow fleet"
The German Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it would take additional measures against Russia's "shadow fleet", which operates in the Baltic Sea and North Sea.
Western sanctions designed to cut Russia's oil revenue following its invasion in Ukraine have resulted in the growth of a vast, "shadow fleet", of tankers which helps Moscow keep its crude exports flowing.
German authorities will begin questioning passing oil tankers on Tuesday about their insurance against damage caused by oil pollution. The Foreign Ministry said that insurance coverage for "shadow fleets" is often unknown because they avoid reputable insurance companies and European ports.
In a statement, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said: "Our goal is clear: we are increasing pressure on the Russian Shadow Fleet and protecting the Baltic Sea."
