Karpowership, a Turkish company, is in the running for supplying power to Syria

Posted to Maritime Reporter on December 30, 2024

Karpowership of Turkey, the owner of a fleet of floating power plants, announced on Monday that it is just one of several options being considered for providing electricity in Syria.

After rebels supported by Turkey overthrew Bashar al Assad in Syria's neighbouring country this month, after a 13 year civil war talks were held between Ankara and the new rulers of the country on the supply electricity.

Many energy production options are being evaluated. Karpowership responded in a press release when asked whether it was part of power supply negotiations that they were one of many alternatives.

There are discussions between countries and alternatives are being assessed. "It is still too early to comment at this point."

Alparslan Bayraktar, the Turkish Energy Minister, has stated that Turkey is ready to export electric power to Syria.

Powerships, also known as floating power plants or ships, are another option that Turkey has to provide electricity.

Karpowership, a Karadeniz Holdings' ship, produces electricity in 12 African and South American countries with its vessels anchored in the ports of those countries.

The largest ships of the company have a combined capacity of 470MW, which is over 10% of Syria's estimated installed electricity. The ports need to have enough electricity transmission capacity in order for the vessels to be connected. Can Sezer, Daren Butler and Jonathan Spicer edited the article.
