Linus Ullmark and the Senators blank Islanders
Ridly Greig's short-handed goal and Jake Sanderson's power-play goal helped the Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders by 3-0 on Saturday in Elmont, N.Y.
Michael Amadio scored an "empty-net" goal late in the third period and Linus Ullmark stopped all the shots he was faced by the Senators (43 27 10, 96 points), winning their fourth consecutive game.
If the New Jersey Devils beat the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, they can secure a playoff spot for the second straight season.
The Senators (43-27-10) and Boston Bruins (96%, 96 points), are tied at the top of the standings for?wild cards.
Ilya Sorokin made 13 saves in the Islanders' 43-32-5 (91 points) 0 for 5 power play. The Islanders fell to 1-1-0 in their first season under Peter DeBoer, and they lost for the 5th time in 6 games.
New York's only chance to make the playoffs is by beating the Philadelphia Flyers for the final postseason spot in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders were one point behind the Flyers, who will visit Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.
The Senators scored the only goal that they needed during the Islanders' first power play.
Greig pushed Pageau and forced the puck into the Ottawa zone. Amadio grabbed the puck before New York's Tony DeAngelo. Amadio chased the puck down and passed a backhanded pass between Lee's legs to Greig. Pageau was in pursuit.
Carson Soucy, a Senators defenseman, and Ryan 'Pulock were both whistled for tripping within 34 seconds of each other. This led to a 5-on-3 which resulted in the Senators scoring their second goal at 7:24. Dylan Cozens shot from the left faceoff circle was deflected by Sorokin.
Amadio sealed the victory with 2 minutes 31 seconds left after Sorokin's exit.
