Microsoft Azure cloud service affected by Red Sea fiber cut

Posted to Maritime Reporter on September 6, 2025

Microsoft announced on Saturday that Microsoft Azure users could experience an increase in latency as a result of multiple fiber cuts under the Red Sea.

The company warned that traffic traversing the Middle East, originating or terminating in Asia and Europe, may be subject to increased disruptions.

We will continue to monitor, rebalance and optimize routing in order to minimize the impact on customers. Microsoft stated that it would continue to update customers daily, or earlier if conditions changed.

Azure, the second-largest cloud provider in the world after Amazon AWS, has had to reroute traffic through alternate paths, resulting in higher than normal latencies.
