Posted to Maritime Reporter on June 16, 2025

Ocean racing fans will be happy to hear that Itajai, Brazil's port for the Southern Ocean Leg finish in 2027 and 2030 has been confirmed by The Ocean Race.

Santa Catarina's coastal hotspot has become a favourite stopover on the route around the world, attracting more than one million fans as sailors limp back from the wildest seas.

Johan Salen said, "Itajai has always been a welcome stopover, especially after the longest leg of sea, for The Ocean Race.

The passion of the Itajai people for the Race, and the leadership that the Itajai team has shown in achieving sustainable event excellence make it a perfect fit for a five-year stopover.

In 2023, the city was the first in Brazil to join the UN's #CleanSeas Campaign. The race officials confirmed that the 2027 edition of the race will feature the foiling IMOCA Yachts, known for their record breaking speeds.

Robison Cóelho is the mayor of Itajai. He said, "This partnership will bring together this wonderful event with the governments of Itajai as well as the state of Santa Catarina." "Now, planning is underway to make it the largest edition of The Ocean Race in Itajai's history. ?ever had."

The legacy of the stopover extends beyond racing. A fleet of donated small training boats is now used as a sailing academy where The Ocean Race engages with local children on each visit. This fosters ocean literacy and a connection to sea.

The Ocean Race is a grueling and prestigious offshore sailing event that takes crews around the world for a month-long journey. It tests endurance, teamwork, and seamanship.

The Whitbread Round the World Race was first held in 1973. It has since evolved into a high tech contest with cutting edge yachts racing from the Southern Ocean up to the North Atlantic. Professional sailors compete in the race between ports around the world. (Editing by Christian Radnedge).
