Orsted resumes its work on the US offshore wind farm following the lifting of the stop-work order

Posted to Maritime Reporter on September 24, 2025

Orsted, a Danish company, announced on Wednesday that it has resumed construction on an offshore wind project in the United States after a federal court ruled on Monday that it can restart the project while the Trump Administration's legal case against the project is still ongoing.

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has issued a stop work order for Revolution Wind on August 22, marking the latest in President Donald Trump’s campaign to demolish the renewable energy industry.

At the time, Revolution Wind was located 24 km (15 miles) off the coast Rhode Island. All offshore foundations were in place, and 45 out of 65 wind turbines had been installed.

When completed, Revolution Wind will be able to provide enough electricity for 350,000 homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut.

According to court documents filed by both companies in the United States, Orsted and its joint venture partner Skyborn Renewables had already committed or spent about $5 billion on the project. If the project were cancelled, they would have to pay over $1 billion for breakaway costs. (Reporting and editing by Margueritachoy, Elviira luoma, Louise Rasmussen)
