Philippines and U.S. hold joint maritime exercises for the seventh time
Manila's military said that the Philippines and United States have been sailing together in the South China Sea seven times to improve interoperability.
The exercise, which was held in the waters near the provinces Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, and away from contested areas, included joint operations along shorelines and fire support.
The Philippine Armed Forces said that the MCA (maritime collaborative activity) was a demonstration of two nations' determination to enhance cooperation and interoperability, in accordance with international law.
The Philippine vessel Miguel Malvar was also displayed during the joint sail. This 118-metre guided rocket frigate was commissioned just last month. The corvette is one of two built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea as part of the Philippines' modernisation program.
Under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s leadership, military engagements have increased between treaty allies. This is due to the fact that China has been increasing its presence in South China Sea.
China claims sovereignty in nearly the entire South China Sea. This includes parts of Brunei's exclusive economic zone, as well as those of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. (Reporting and editing by David Stanway; Mikhail Flores)
