Rugby-Evergreen prop Slipper signs up for another Super Rugby season

Posted to Maritime Reporter on May 26, 2025

James Slipper, the Wallabies' prop, has signed a contract extension of one year with the ACT Brumbies. This will likely see him become Super Rugby's most-capped player.

The 35-year old loosehead has already played 195 Super Rugby games since his debut with the Queensland Reds back in 2010.

This leaves him only seven appearances behind the All Blacks' and Canterbury Crusaders' prop Wyatt Crockett. He is likely to break this record next season.

Slipper stated in a statement to the press that "I couldn't refuse the option of playing for the Brumbies another season."

"My body still feels good, and I am the fittest I've felt in a very long time. I still feel that I'm contributing to the team and playing at an excellent level. "As long as I am able to do this, I will continue giving my best for the Brumbies."

The Brumbies will face the Canterbury Crusaders on Friday in Canberra's final Super Rugby round, looking to secure a top-two position in the standings as well as home advantage for the first two playoff rounds.

"Slipps has an incredible work ethic and is the ultimate professional." Stephen Larkham, Brumbies' coach, said that Slipps is a player of the highest calibre who consistently delivers for them season after season.

He has improved his form this season, he is outstanding. "His set-piece, defense, carrying, and leadership have proven important for the team."

Slipper is in a strong position to be selected to play the test series in July and August against the British & Irish Lions, thanks to his versatility.

He was a substitute in all three Lions Tests in 2013, and is among a select group of Wallabies veterans who hope to equal George Smith's feat (2001 and 2013), by facing the tourists twice. (Reporting and editing by Peter Rutherford, Nick Mulvenney)
