SailGP wants to attract new fans through a docuseries called 'Uncharted.'

SailGP released its first ever docuseries, "Uncharted", on Tuesday. The three-part series focuses on Red Bull Italy SailGP's CEO Jimmy Spithill who is leading the new team in their inaugural season.

SailGP, the world sailing championship, features national teams competing on identical high-performance F50 catamarans capable of speeds exceeding 50 knots.

In the six years that have passed since its inception, the league founded by billionaire Larry Ellison has been working to convert a whole new generation of football fans. This is despite continued growth both in attendance and TV viewership.

Melissa Lawton is the Chief Content Officer at SailGP, and she has been tasked with boosting the entertainment arm of the league.

It's important to build our brand and break down barriers for sailing as a sport.

"Uncharted", which launches next month, is a response to the surge in popularity of sports documentaries that was boosted by Formula One’s "Drive to Survive" and helped create a new generation of American fans.

The docuseries, SailGP, has drawn comparisons to Formula One. Its charismatic star is Spithill. He was the former U.S. SailGP Team Driver who won the America's Cup in just 30 years.

These boats are fast, and they're very unstable. Ellison stated in the documentary that if they are positioned at an incorrect angle or if there is a failure of any equipment, then anything can go wrong.

"These boats even end up, upside down. Jimmy was not one of those athletes who succumbed to the pressure. "He was more powerful than I had ever imagined." (Reporting and editing by Ed Osmond in New York; Amy Tennery, New York)
