Posted to Maritime Reporter on October 3, 2025

The Swedish defence ministry announced on Friday that it is drafting legislation to enhance security in the Baltic Sea through the expansion of the coast guard's maritime surveillance capabilities.

Baltic Sea Region is on high alert after a series of outages of gas and cable pipelines under the sea in the years that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine 2022, and recent drone sightings.

Carl-Oskar Böhlin, Sweden's Minister of Civil Defence, said in a press release: "We did not choose our external situation. But we must face the reality that we are faced with."
