Syria announces tender for 200,000 tons of wheat, traders claim
European traders reported on Thursday that a state grain buyer in Syria had issued an international bid to purchase around 200,000 metric tonnes of soft milling Wheat.
The deadline to submit price offers is 15 September.
The Ministry of Economy and Industry of Syria announced on Wednesday that it would issue a tender to purchase 200,000 metric tonnes of wheat in order to cover the domestic shortage.
On August 18, it was reported that Syria faces a potential crisis of food due to the worst drought for 36 years, which has reduced wheat production by 40%. The cash-strapped Syrian government is also struggling to make large purchases.
According to traders, the new contract for Syria requires shipment within 60 days of award. Partially shipped goods are allowed, but must not be less than 100,000 tonnes.
Syria bought around 100,000 tons of grain in its previous bid reported on 25 March, which was believed to have been the first large-scale purchase since the change in power in Syria last year. Michael Hogan reported, Jane Merrill edited.
