UK sanctions target 135 Russian tankers from the shadow fleet
The UK imposed new sanctions Monday on Russia's "shadow fleet", which includes 135 oil tanks, as well as two Russian companies: shipping company Intershipping Services LLC, and oil trader Litasco Middle East DMCC.
The British government says that the oil tankers play a crucial role in Russia's energy sector and oil industry. They are part of a fleet of ships responsible for transporting $24 billion of cargo since 2024. ?
David Lammy, the Foreign Minister of Canada, said that new sanctions will further "dismantle", Russian President Vladimir Putin’s "shadow fleet" and drain Russia’s war chest from its vital oil revenues.
Intershipping Services LLC, according to the government, is responsible for the registration of vessels flying the Gabonese national flag. This allows them to transport goods worth up to $10 billion annually on behalf the Russian state.
The government also announced that sanctions were imposed against Litasco Middle East DMCC, for its role in continuing to ship large quantities of Russian oil.
The Russian Embassy in London has not responded to an immediate request for a comment about the latest sanctions. Moscow has in the past called Western sanctions illegal, and claimed that they destabilize global energy markets. The European Union approved an 18th package against Russia for its war in Ukraine on Friday. This included measures to deal further blows to Russia's oil and energy industries.
