US Navy tests sea based hypersonic launch system in Florida
The U.S. Navy announced Friday that it had successfully tested an advanced hypersonic launch system from a space-based base at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. This is a major step towards deploying these weapons at sea.
The Navy tested its cold-gas approach to launch, which involves ejecting the missiles from the ship platform prior to ignition. This ensures a safe distance. The method will be used for future sea-based deployments including aboard the USS Zumwalt.
John Phelan, the Navy Secretary, said that "the speed, range and survivability" of hypersonic weapons were key to deterrence in America.
Lockheed Martin Corp. is the main contractor of the weapon.
The test is being conducted as the United States race to develop hypersonic technology, while Russia and China are also working on similar technologies.
According to reports, Russia used hypersonic weapons in Ukraine. China has denied conducting weapon tests despite U.S. claims. (Reporting and editing by Matthew Lewis in Washington)
