What are the differences between India and Pakistan militaries as tensions increase after the attack in Kashmir?
A 26-man attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir has caused tensions between India, Pakistan, and fears of conflict. Pakistan has said it has intelligence that India plans to launch military action.
According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, here is an overview of the arsenals and defence forces of South Asian neighbors that are nuclear-armed.
PERSONNEL
India's defence forces are made up of 1.4 million personnel - 1237,000 soldiers in the army, 75,000 in the navy and 149,900 airmen.
Pakistan has a smaller force with less than 700,000 people, 560,000 of which are in the Army, 70,000 in its Air Force, and 30,000 members in its Navy.
GROUND FORCE
India has 9,743 artillery pieces compared to Pakistan’s 4,619, and 3,740 main combat tanks as opposed to Pakistan’s 2,537.
Air Force
Pakistan's fleet, which has 452 aircraft, is smaller than India's 730 aircraft.
India's Navy has 16 submersibles, 11 destroyers and 16 frigates. Pakistan's Navy has eight submersibles and ten frigates.
NUCLEAR ARSENAL
India boasts 172 warheads, while Pakistan has 170.
