Taiwan Teams with COMART on IMO Compliant Plan
Taiwan partnered with the Canadian Office of Maritime Technology (COMART) to complete an IMO compliant audit for the year 2022. This audit included three IMO auditors and encompassed the flag, coastal and port state obligations of Taiwan as they relate to the applicable IMO instruments.
In accordance with conventions and requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) The Republic of China (Taiwan) maintains high standards in relation to its maritime safety and environmental protection regime even though Taiwan is not a formal member of the IMO. In accordance with the IMO framework Taiwan has rigorously implemented practices and principles that align with those of all IMO member states.
To achieve these goals Taiwan partnered with the Canadian Office of Maritime Technology (COMART) to complete an IMO compliant audit for the year 2022. This audit included three IMO auditors and encompassed the flag, coastal and port state obligations of Taiwan as they relate to the applicable IMO instruments.
Taiwan and COMART collaborated closely with eighteen Taiwan maritime agencies to ensure that the audit was comprehensive and up-to-date. Utilizing the IMO guidelines and with the support of COMART Canada, Taiwan was able to conduct a complete audit and draft a detailed corrective action plan as required.
This partnership with COMART Canada enabled Taiwan to identify and rectify potential issues in relation to all maritime safety and environmental protection practices.
The audit process identified areas to be addressed, such as vessel safety, navigational safety, pollution prevention, and environmental protection. Taiwan has demonstrated its commitment to achieving high standards in maritime safety and environmental protection.
Taiwan's efforts have set an example for other nations that aspire to improve their maritime safety and environmental protection goals. It is a testament to Taiwan’s commitment to safe shipping and to protecting the oceans and marine environment.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Taiwan Maritime and Port Bureau played an important role in the implementation of this IMO compliant audit program.
Taiwan is a significant international maritime state and is determined to ensure high standards of compliance of all IMO instrument requirements. COMART of Canada has assisted in this effort for over 20 years and is committed to continuing with this important international maritime initiative.
