The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the lead ship of the Navy's next-generation of multimission surface combatants, May 20. DDG 1000 is tailored for sustained operations in the littorals and land attack, and will provide independent forward presence and deterrence, support special operations forces, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces.

High Speed Support Vessel Delivered to Oman Navy
RNOV Al Mubshir, the first of two 72-meter High Speed Support Vessels (HSSVs) to be built by Austal Limited for the Royal Navy of Oman under a $124.9 million design, construct and integrated logistics support contract, has been delivered. Austal commenced construction of the HSSVs in August 2014 at its Henderson, Western Australia shipyard, with the second HSSV scheduled to be delivered later in CY2016, in line with the contract.

Four students from Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) have been awarded Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships. Chosen based on their academic achievement, financial need and plans to pursue a career in the maritime industry, the four recipients are Patrick Goldsmith, Jack McMurrer, Paige Mentuck and Christina Murphy. A new ASD tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. was launched on April 26, 2016 in Jiangsu Province, China for its Peruvian owners. Based on Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAmparts 2400W class, the Chincha was built by Jiangsu Wuxi Shipyard and fully customized to meet her owner’s requirements. Chincha is the first of two RAmparts 2400W tugs to be built for the growing Peruvian maritime and port operations company, Trabajos Marítimos S.A. (Tramarsa).

New Tug Heads for New Zealand
Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey said it is in the process of shipping a Robert Allan Limited designed Rascal Class ASD tugboat to Port Otago Limited (POL) in New Zealand. The new tug, Arihi, named in consultation with the local Rununga (Maori council), measures 18 m long, has a bollard pull of 30 t and was completed in less than five months from date of order. Arihi will be primarily used by POL in assisting in channel dredging, a task that began in 2015.
