Seaspan Venture: Like for Like
“We don’t usually remove the heads at mid-life on the Cummins engines,” Randy Beckler, Shore Engineer for Seaspan Marine, explained in reference to the 2003 launched Seaspan Venture’s third like-for-like repower. The repower was completed in the first week of February 2016. The Seaspan Venture, like her sister the Seaspan Tempest, had a pair of Cummins KTA38 M0 engines when new builds. These engines were changed out at over 40,000 hours.

Hapag-Lloyd Sees Uptick of Incorrectly Declared Dangerous Goods
Container shipper Hapag-Lloyd said it registered considerably more incorrectly declared dangerous goods last year, compared to 2014. The Watchdog program developed jointly by Hapag-Lloyd’s IT and dangerous goods experts – a special safety software that continuously checks cargo data to identify anything conspicuous identified 4,314 incorrectly declared dangerous goods cases last year. This is an increase of 65 percent on the previous year’s figure of 2,620 cases.
US Warship Rescues Mariners in Distress
Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) came to the rescue of distressed mariners at sea, February 7. Australian Navy Commissions HMAS Adelaide
GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbines now power the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Adelaide which was commissioned in late 2015. Alongside sister HMAS Canberra, these 230-meter-long Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships are the largest vessels ever built for the RAN. According to the RAN, HMAS Adelaide was designed with the shallowest possible draft and can deploy an embarked force of more than 1,000 personnel and their equipment, landing ashore via landing craft or helicopters.

Fincantieri Launches Majestic Princess for China
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has launched its first cruise ship destined for the Chinese market, and will now begin interior fittings ahead of the vessel’s delivery scheduled for spring 2017. New Offshore Vessel to be Fitted with Cathelco BWTS
Cathelco is supplying a ballast water treatment (BWT) system for a new offshore vessel built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc., for Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC. The Harvey Stone (Hull 234), a Rampage 6400 multipurpose field support vessel (MPFSV), with a length of 64.8m and 18m beam, is due to be delivered in Q2 2016. The Cathelco BWT system is based on a combination of filtration and UV technology and has a capacity of 150m3/hr.
Optimarin Breaks into the Fishing Market
Ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin has landed its first ever contract in the fishing segment. The Norwegian firm will now supply its soon to be USCG approved Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) for the Skipsteknisk-designed America’s Finest. Seattle-based Fisherman’s Finest will own and operate the 80-meter-long stern trawler, which is currently being completed at Washington’s Dakota Creek Industries yard.
