Year of Grain and Steel Boosts Seaway Season
With just one month left of the season, St. Lawrence Seaway cargo shipments are expected to finish ahead of 2013 after a remarkable year of grain exports and steel imports. According to the St. Lawrence Seaway, total cargo shipments reached 34.6 million metric tons for the period from March 25 to November 30 — up 5 percent over the same period last year. Seaway management expect the season will close ahead of last year by a similar margin.

Maersk, Hamburg Sud Lead Reliability Rankings
Maersk Line and Hamburg Sud are ranked as the two most reliable container shipping carriers, according to performance rankings published in the new online version of the Carrier Performance Insight (http://cpi.drewry.co.uk) published by shipping consultancy Drewry. Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd were by far the most reliable carriers in the three months to October 2014 with overall on-time performances of 80.4% and 78.5% respectively.
Elkon Wins Hybrid Ferry Contract
Elkon (Istanbul), a subsidiary of Imtech Marine, has been awarded an interesting contract from Sedef Shipyard (Tuzla, Istanbul) for the delivery of the electrical equipment, propulsion system and services for two Canadian Seaspan hybrid ferries. The two, 148.9 m, dual-fuelled (diesel and liquefied natural gas) ferries are propelled by a hybrid-electrical propulsion system and can accommodate up to 59 trailers.

Since 1990, BIMCO and ICS have conducted a comprehensive survey of the world’s supply and demand of seafarers every five years. BIMCO and ICS are inviting the shipping industry to participate in the next Manpower Report. Previous studies have shown that a large number of officers are expected to retire in the near future. Furthermore, an anticipated growth in trade will generate the need for more officers and ratings due to the increase in the number of ships needed to meet demand.
Rolls-Royce Secures Deck Machinery Contract
Rolls-Royce is to deliver an extensive package of advanced deck machinery to six new high-end anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS) to be built by Kleven in Norway for the Danish ship owner Maersk Supply Service. The contract with Kleven is worth in excess of £54m to Rolls-Royce, and includes an option for an additional four vessels. This represents the largest single contract for deck machinery that Rolls-Royce has won.
