When British Antarctic Survey’s RRS (Royal Research Ship) Ernest Shackleton was drydocked recently in Denmark, the superintendent, engineers and paint specialists there to check the condition of the hull paint were amazed. After two seasons of battering its way through ice up to 2.5 meters thick with a high content of gravel and volcanic lava adding to its abrasiveness, the hull coating was virtually intact and undamaged.
O&G industry body Decom North Sea acts to try to ease predicted skills shortages
Decom North Sea (DNS), the offshore oil & gas decommissioning forum, has commissioned research into the future labour and skills requirements for the growing decommissioning sector to try to alleviate predicted skills shortages in future. With more than £1billion a year of decommissioning expenditure forecast for the UK North Sea by 2015 and only 7% of projects completed to date, DNS will make its findings available to training bodies to help ensure appropriately skilled people are available.
AVEVA joins OpenHCM Consortium
AVEVA, a leader in engineering design and information management solutions for the plant, power and marine industries, today announced it has joined the OpenHCM (Hull Conditioning Monitoring) Consortium, an initiative to increase ship safety though transparent electronic processing of assessment data for the in-service operation of ships and offshore platforms. The OpenHCM Consortium was formed to carry on the work started under the EC’s CAS projects to develop a neutral exchange standard.
Rolls-Royce Wins £15m Brazilian Order for Offshore Supply Vessels
Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has won an order to design and equip two UT 735 SE offshore supply vessels for Brasil Supply. The order is worth £15 million to Rolls-Royce.

An Argentinian Shipbuilding Revival
According to a blog on the Bulletin Panama (http://thebulletinpanama.com), there is a boatbuilding revival happening in Argentina. The plant, near the city of Rosario, on the Rio de la Plata, is equipped with the latest naval processes using national steel for the construction of boats. The story reports that to date, 21 double-hulled tank barges of 3,000 cubic meters capacity have been delivered and another 21 of 2,500 tons each, for the transport of bulk and dry cargoes.
