With all the activity in the offshore and inland markets these days there is a ray of hope for operators who are willing to adapt to the changes that are coming. As mariners, we are good at adapting, unfortunately, we’ll be dealing with conflicting governance of state and federal laws and the uncertainty of subchapter status for new vessel types to be designed, constructed and operated in support of the emerging offshore wind energy market.

Hijacked Maltese Flagged Vessel Released
Early the morning of July 29, the Maltese flagged merchant vessel MV Frigia was released. The MV Frigia, a Maltese flagged cargo ship with a deadweight of 35,000 tonnes was hijacked on March 23, 2010 approximately 1,000 nautical miles east of the northern Somali coastline. MV Frigia has a crew of 21 (19 Turkish and two Ukrainian).

U.S. Coast Guard Responds to Wellhead Allision
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an allision between a towing vessel and a wellhead in the Barataria Waterway at approximately 1 a.m., July 27. The tug vessel Pere Ana C, pushing the dredge barge Captain Buford Berry, allided with the wellhead while it transited the Barataria Waterway. The wellhead is currently emanating oil and natural gas into Barataria Bay. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans issued a Broadcast Notice to Mariners that a report of oil release was detected.

Huisman Delivers Crane to Deep Water Construction Vessel
Huisman and Heerema Offshore Services signed a Letter of Intent for the delivery of all mission equipment onboard Heerema’s new Deep Water Construction Vessel. Huisman will design, construct and install a 4,000mt Offshore Mast Crane and a pipelay tower for both J-lay and Reel-lay operations in ultra deep water. Installation of equipment is scheduled for 2012/2013, partly at the DSME yard in South Korea and partly at the Huisman quay in Schiedam, The Netherlands.

Multraship Rescues Coaster Holed by Fishing Vessel
Dutch Towage and salvage specialist Multraship has successfully brought the 1,258 dwt, St Vincent & Grenadine-flag general cargo vessel Janina to safety after it was holed by a fishing vessel while at anchor at Buitenbanken, near Rotterdam. The fishing vessel GO 27 collided with the Janina in the early hours of July 26, resulting in a crack in the ship’s hull on the starboard side, leading to immediate flooding of the engine room, from where the water ingressed into the ship’s accommodation.
